Freeport Clock Tower Stops After 32 Years of Service
The Freeport county courthouse clock, installed February 1873 for 2000 dollars, is dismantled for repairs after 32 years of continuous use. The massive mechanism includes a 1800 pound bell and a 1500 pound striker weight, with rust and dirt to be cleaned for near original performance.

Gum Saved Our Lives On Saginaw Lake Adventure
In Duluth a woman and two timber cruisers faced disaster when their birch bark canoe struck a submerged rock on Saginaw lake near the Canadian border. Water flooded in as ice formed along the edges. Mrs. Helen Bartlett produced a large wad of chewing gum to seal the leak and save the group.

Fatal Conductor Dies Under Train After Crash Near Tiadaghton
Frederick Henderson, conductor on the New York Central, crushed beneath his engine at Tiadaghton, died at Lawrenceville while enroute to Corning. His last plea urged the engine to speed for his wife, Mrs Henderson, awaiting at the depot. The dispatch ordered trains sidetracked for right of way as the engine and caboose continued toward home. A surgeon aboard at Stokesdale Junction found him dying before reaching Corning.
