Indian Affairs Expenditure and Ration System Report

Washington reports total government spending on the Indian service from 1789 to July 20 1908 reached 464 1153 217 dollars. For the fiscal year ending that July expenditures were 14 175 187 dollars with only about 2 330 dollars toward Indian education. The Commissioner notes savings from open market and common carrier supply transport estimated at 20 percent in rent and criticizes the ration system annuity payments and allotment leasing as obstacles to sales support. The reserve Indian population is about 267 000 with 15 270 on daily rations.
