Williston Merchants Plan Monster Patriotic Fourth

Local business leaders vow an all day Fourth of July program in Williston with Loyalty Day events and a fireworks display West of the Twin Cities. Features include a baseball tournament with the Williston and All Nation teams, auto races at the Fairgrounds headlined by a ten mile race with 300 dollar purse, stock cars and numerous patriotic set pieces. Organizers expect multiple town teams and strong public turnout for a grand celebration.

Opportunes Open 1917 Season With 11 4 Win at Home

Williston fans saw Marshall and the Opportunes defeat Grenora 11 to 4 in the season opener at the new ballpark. Browning started on the mound for Williston, limiting Grenora to four hits in five innings as Fisher held them to one. Stovern homered for Williston as Stevern and Immings contributed in the field. crowd was about 1000 with wind and sand affecting play. The local squad heads to Sidney for two games this weekend and will host Sidney next week, with Minot slated for late month travel.

North Dakota Troops Not Yet Mobilized but Possible Soon

In Grand Forks on May 15 Adjutant General T A Thoraldson said North Dakota National Guard units are not ordered to federal service yet. Company E officers said the muster indicates only training camp linkage in the south with a September start and winter drills, subject to change if emergencies arise.

City Commission Urges Buy of U. S. Liberty Bonds

W S Davidson outlined Williston’s readiness to take a block of Liberty Bonds from the sinking fund if wise for the North Dakota plan. Subscriptions across the state near 200000. northwest counties form county committees with bankers and business leaders to sell bonds.

Red Cross War Council Formed by President Wilson

President Wilson creates a Red Cross war council including Henry P. Davidson and Edward N. Hurley to coordinate relief and fundraising for the war effort. He urges chapters to mobilize finances, retain up to 25 percent for local needs, and telegraph committee members to Seward Prosser for approval of plans.

Williston rivals shine at Northwestern declamation meet

Jamies M. Shikany of Williston won boys first in the Northwestern District Declamation contest at Minot State Normal School with Victor Hugo's The Guillotine. Miss Irma Hendrick of Minot led girls, while Harold Shaft and Dorothy Whitson placed second in their divisions.

Elks Plan Flag Day Observance in Williston

The Williston Lodge of Elks schedules Flag Day events on June 14 including a morning salute by Company E, a military parade, armory exercises with a state speaker, a Red Cross fundraiser baseball game, evening dance, and store hours adjustment.
