Eprron and Williston School District officers and trustees are listed with President Freextas and Clerk R. Coretano. Regular meetings occur Wednesdays, with notes on monthly Tuesday events and local government roles. Weather Bureau mention appears on page four, plus local anecdotes and a late train history.
The snow of the past days is described as a great blessing for farmers and stock men. A small party was hosted by Mr. Clint Hedderich at his Hedderich mansion on Saturday evening for a few friends. The Carrington Independent is overflowing with ads and editor Bro Palmer pushes locals. Minot home talent minstrel troupe visited Towner last week, delivering a grand entertainment praised by The News and Stockman.
The notes cover Geese seen northward, workers hired for rail bed work with Great Northern crews, and plans for framing pictures by G M Thomas. Trade ads list hay and horses for sale, local clergy announcements, and a fire at E D Kelly’s general store reported as a total loss with insurance coverage.
Board of County Commissioners will meet in regular session on Monday April 4 1898. Road supervisors wardens and assessors appointed at last session are asked to attend and receive instructions. By order of the Board T C Gatses Chairman. There is no change in the war situation over the Maine disaster. court of inquiry has made no report yet. Preparations for any emergency are going forward in every department.
The Williston Town Board met in special session on March 14 1898 with Freeman and Yanneck present and Zahl absent. They accepted John Sassen’s plan to sell land in section 24 township 154 range 101 for 100 dollars for town dumping grounds and authorized Copeland to prepare a deed for Lassen to execute.
Judge Winchester rules the last session law annexing unorganized territory west of the river to Stark and Billings Counties is constitutional. Cattlemen contend it will bring their herds into taxable counties. Burke urged for cattlemen, Simpson for the county. The decision favors the county and the cattlemen will appeal to the supreme court.
A cable from Minister Woodford reports to the cabinet that Spain cannot raise funds for war against the United States. European financial centers reject Spain’s overtures. Woodford says Sagasta would concede to keep peace, but Cortes hostility risks government overthrow and possible war if Sagasta stays.
