London July 11 British forces captured Contalmaison in France and took trenches in Mamelz wood with trench fighting around Trones wood. French seized Lamasonette hill dominating the Somme valley, aiding Anglo French aims. Germans shell from Lena to Belgian coast as Russians advance toward Kovel. Braman Dies at Home Near Buford at 86

L W Braman father of Mrs A L Butler of this city died at his home near Buford Sunday morning July 9 and was buried in Williston cemetery Monday. Born August 22 1842 in New York he served in the Civil War and later lived in Illinois Nebraska Kalispell Montana and Coeur d Alene Idaho before settling on a Buford area farm in 1908. He was a Grand Army of the Republic member and a Mason at Mondak Montana.

Williston Man Transferred in North Dakota Infantry

Williston, July 11 preparations for the departure of the First North Dakota Infantry United States Volunteers are underway. The first battalion has begun striking tents and preparing to entrain for the south as camp grounds are vacated. Lieutenant Fred Moore is appointed to Company M, replacing Harley Hanson who failed medical exams. Metzger, Williston, now first sergeant of Company M, takes over from B. E. Stevens. Destination is censored, but rumors place the unit near El Paso Texas or San Diego California.

Glendive Player Wrenches Ankle In Sunday Game

Fred Chicken Glendive's popular third baseman suffered a broken bone above the ankle during a Bruegger Park game last Sunday while at first base. A physician treated him, he was taken to a hospital, then returned home to Stanley after fracture reduction.

Williston Man Will Not Recover From Brain Injury

W K Benton a former Great Northern trainmaster on the Williston division was fatally wounded when struck by a snow plow on the Berthold branch in February. He lay unconscious for eleven days in St Paul then showed partial improvement but never regained usable speech. Doctors trepanned him but brain degeneration progressed and current prognosis is hopeless.

Storm Collapses Tent During Tom Steece Show

Last Thursday evening a severe storm struck Arnegard during the Tom Steece show, causing the tent to collapse as spectators were leaving. The half hour blast of wind hail and rain narrowly avoided serious injuries thanks to vigilant attendants, with no major damages reported beyond the collapsed tent.

Picnic Day At Experiment Station Aims At 5000 Attendees

German Underwater Liner Brings Cargo of Mail and Dyes

Norfolk reports the Deutschland, a German undersea merchant liner, entered Chesapeake Bay with mail and chemicals from Bremen. The 700 ton craft traveled about 4,000 miles, evading enemy ships, and was escorted up the bay by the tug Thomas F. Timmins. Captain Frederick Cocke led a crew of 29, asserting a commercial mission to reopen trade with the United States.

John Rowland Guilty of Murder in District Court

John Rowland found guilty of murder in district court after a two hour deliberation. The 40 or 41 year old man reportedly killed Harry Walcott during a dispute between families. Sentencing expected to 20 years in the penitentiary. Separate trial sought by Mrs. Rowland ongoing. Also notes of job placements from Aakers Business College and a catalog request.

Floral parade and grand ball for Elks in Baltimore

Baltimore hosts the Grand Lodge of the Order of Elks with 700 registered, officials estimate twice that number arrived. Grand Exalted Ruler James R. Nicholson cites 433,000 Elks in 1,340 lodges. Heavy storm ravages slope country near Glen Allen

A severe July storm near Glen Allen four miles west caused a fatality when John Loth, 18, was killed by a canoe mishap at a birthday event for Chris M. Diede and Anna Ulmer. In Bismarck, telephone service suffered severe outages from lightning with 140 lines down and depot damage. Mandan escaped direct impact while farms in Morton County reported destroyed barns and farm buildings.

Early seed inspection urged by Bolley

L. Bolley the state pure seed commissioner has sent letters to flax seed and durum wheat growers urging them to apply for seed inspections. He notes limited force and funds, and says inspectors will check wilt resistant flax, durum for admixtures and disease, and bromegrass fields for quackgrass, with other inspections by special request. Growers should write with farm location and willingness to meet the inspector at North Dakota Agricultural College.

Food shipments resume into Sonora amid Mexican rail talks

Nogales Arizona July 11 shipments of food from the United States to Sonora resume after a three week disruption as talks begin in Nogales and Sonora between Mexican railroad authorities and firms to restore operation under military control. Four Utah cavalry troops arrived, while Villa forces retreating from Jiminez clashed with Carranza troops at Parral in a fierce engagement.

Northern Pacific Conductor Murdered by Drunk Passenger

Conductor W. Brown aged 54, employed 25 years by Northern Pacific, was killed on train No. 4 between Glendive and Billings. A drunken man struck Brown with a beer bottle as he checked receipts. The assailant was seized by passengers and handed to officers at Glendive. Brown will be buried from his daughter's home, Mrs. Hurley Malone.
