Eight Hor Labor Law Hints Cost Rise on Isthmus
The first annual report of the canal commission says enforcing the eight hour law on the isthmusk will slow banana canal work. Wages range 80 cents to 1.04 dollars daily, with over 80 percent of workers laborers. Applying US labor laws to aliens will raise costs by at least 25 percent, adding millions to total expenditure. The commission urges excluding eight hour, contractor, Chinese exclusion, and related laws from isthmus labor. Sanitation progress improves with yellow fever nearly wiped out. 4100 workers in sanitary work and 1,000,000 cubic yards moved.
