In Duluth on February 14 Matt Hill grew weak six miles from Two Harbors while walking with Frank Jansen. Jansen built a fire and left to fetch help. Hill rolled into the flames and suffered severe burns, left nearly dead from exposure, and was hospitalized with doubtful recovery.
Fire destroyed the eight story Schwabacher Hardware Co. building at Jackson street and First avenue south. Loss estimated at 400000 with insurance. Flames reached packing rooms on the third floor triggering explosions from hundreds of loaded cartridges. Cause believed to be crossed electric wires.
Miss Comerford an aged spinster in Alexandria Minnesota was robbed of 4000 in cash from a tin box in her trunk while the house was temporarily deserted. Police suspect someone familiar with the premises. The loot included 500 in gold and the rest in 100 bills.
William Beamer eighty two year old Civil War veteran was found partly buried in snow near his timber hut by Lake Elysian Wisconsin on February 14. Investigators said he likely wandered off during a recent blizzard and froze to death with the inquest noting death since last Thursday.
Fargo February 14 Chief Charlot of the Flathead Indian Reservation passed through en route to see President Roosevelt. The visit aims to prevent opening the reservation as President Garfield said would not occur in Charlot's lifetime. Charlot travels with an Indian interpreter and will first meet Senator Beveridge.
Elmer Pilkington a farmer near Sigourney died of blood poisoning caused by chapped lips. He had helped clear a snow blockade, the cold wind chapping his lips badly. On Wednesday his face swelled and blood poisoning set in, and he died a few hours later.
A large deposit of pure iron ore found just west of Rapid City South Dakota may launch a new industry. Tests indicate the ore can be profitably worked by the Bessemer process and it is now used at the state school of mines for experimental work.
Farmers near Montrose plan a large spring department store. A committee formed at the last meeting outlined governing rules. Also noted: Minot and Kenmare contend for the Methodist university. Sharon mourns Mrs. Andrew Bakke, leaving a husband and five children. Kensal seeks snow shovelers.
Reports list Nome Southern Minnesota farmers securing land in North Dakota this spring. Also noted are Dickinson railroad workers ordered vaccinated, J M Lowe injured aiding a moving house, and Benson county farmers considering a mutual fire and lightning insurance company. Other items cover Stutsman County court stenographer J Hurly opening Minot practice, Sherwood mail service issues, and a successful farmers institute at Fairmount despite bad weather.
Tony Thompson a former Superior Wisconsin resident and telephone line worker was found dead in a hotel room with whisky and carbolic acid nearby. Police believe he died by his own action. Thompson had a brother in Minneapolis and his former home was in Superior.
