Fifteen Million Given To Trusts In Freight-Surcharge Case
Washington February 8 A new development in the freight rate case before the Interstate Commerce Commission centers on free rail service to large industrial plants. Commissioner Harlan announces supplementary hearings on reasonable charges for services now provided free to trusts. He notes such free service costs railroads about 15 million dollars annually and discriminates against smaller industries. The proposed rate increases range from three to fifty percent.

Forty Nine Die In Sea Disaster Near Norfolk
A collision between the Dominion liner Monro e and the Nantucket sank the Monro e within ten minutes southeast of Shoal Lightship. Forty nine people perished including twenty five passengers and twenty four crew. Eighty six were rescued as the Nantucket and Monroe pressed through fog in icy Atlantic waters.
