A new postal order starts January 1 requires weekly publishers to charge one cent postage per copy on subscriptions over a year in arrears instead of paying postage by weight. Publishers risk losing pound-rate mail if many arrears exist. annual paper cost rises fifty cents if not prepaid. Notices to all subscribers delayed. next issue will enforce the law and request immediate remittance to bring accounts current.
Last week the Great Northern railroad issued broad layoffs at Devils Lake Minot and nearby. Conductors were demoted to brakemen trainmasters to conductors and many new hires were cut. The plan will hold until business improves and promotions resume.
Paul Ballert and Miss Mabel Folkstadt of McKenzie county were married at Judge Mitchells home on Monday afternoon at five o clock. The ceremony was performed by the judge.
Senator E J Burkett of Nebraska introduces a bill in Congress holding national bank directors responsible for violations of the national banking act by officers or employees with the director’s knowledge. The measure would forfeit the charter of banks whose officers commit such violations, imposing director liability for shareholders depositors and creditors.
Senator Burkett, who began his senate service March 6 1905, will serve until 1911 and previously held seats in the fifty-sixth to fifty-ninth congresses. Miss Katheryn Sheehy and Mr George Leonhardy plan to wed this evening at Father Arsenault's residence with a small ceremony, followed by a wedding supper at the G N hotel dining room. The couple will travel to Carrington and then to the Twin Cities for a short stay. Miss Sheehy works as a dry goods saleslady and Mr Leonhardy is a book-keeper at Bruenger store.
Lakota North Dakota December 25 Congressman A J Gronna will run to succeed himself as congressman at large from North Dakota. He announced today after months of urging from supporters across the state and delegates urging unity. Gronna, in his second term, has earned a reputation as a diligent worker and faces a platform forthcoming for re election.
Notice from the Department of the Interior that new official forms for Homestead Desert Land Timber and Stone and Soldiers Additional Homestead entries will be required after March 1 1908. The changes consolidate existing affidavits to save time and expense for land officers and claimants. P A Balluncer Commissioner.
The band concert advertised for a week has been scheduled for tomorrow night at Gates Theatre. A large crowd is expected and proceeds will pay the band leader’s salary. Attend with friends to support the city’s esteemed band.
W B Overson of Williston Williston Land Company has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court on motion by Senator Lafollette of Wisconsin. Overson, formerly of Madison Wisconsin, studied law in Lafollette's office before moving to North Dakota.
The Crows arrive in Willis ton Monday to perform three consecutive evenings at Gates Opera House. The company is well known in the city and Mr. and Mrs. Barrington lead. First night features Nell Gwinn, second My Uncle From Indiana, third Thelma.
