Western Educational Association Organized in Minot

The 61st annual North Western Educational Association meeting was held April 6 7 in Minot with about 150 teachers from Ward McHenry Pierce Wells counties. Penalty for prairie fires under state law

Prairie fire season warned with a reminder of the statute. Willful or negligent setting of woods marsh or prairie or leaving fires unextinguished is a misdemeanor with fines up to two hundred dollars or up to one year in jail plus civil liability for damages. The person causing the fire is responsible for all damages to ranches buildings fences timber and grass and for injuries to cattle ranges or improvements.

Farmer George Frederick Dies After Prairie Fire Struggle

Coroner G H Thomas investigated the death of farmer George Frederick who lived near Fontier P O about twenty five miles north of Ray. Frederick, age 66, reportedly fought a prairie fire most of the day, collapsed en route to his home, and died of heart failure. He had no known relatives and was buried at Ray on Tuesday.

Horse Thieves Convicted at Towner Court Term

At the recent term in Towner Judge Goss presided over fifteen cases with eleven convictions. Four men tied to a Montana Dakota Canada horse stealing ring were found guilty including Mark A Pace and his alleged hired man Melvin Dill who pled guilty to forgery. Will Engling and Ed Engling faced charges of criminal conspiracy and receiving stolen property respectively. The group allegedly bought horses and cattle under fictitious names and posted security on property not owned.

Courtroom Expose Leads to Arrests in Horse Trafficking Case

An attorney drafted a bill of sale transferring horses within the gang. In court the document was produced by a member who attempted to shift blame but pled guilty, incriminating others. Judge Goss ordered arrests and summoned a special jury. One defendant stood trial while the others pleaded guilty.

Carnegie Offers 30000 Library Support for State University

State University at Grand Forks would gain a library building funded by Andrew Carnegie up to 30000 with the state covering annual maintenance of at least 5000. The plan follows large additions from private and Icelandic collections, creating need for expanded quarters and a first class facility. Judge Goss arrived with warrants issued for several suspects, and preliminary hearings resulted in Earl Allerman discharged while Dan Allerman and Dan Newton were bound over to district court.
