Lynching of Black Suspect After Montana Sheriff Slain

In Sheridan county Montana a colored man J C Collins killed Sheriff Courtney and Deputy Burgmeister after resisting arrest at a Mondak bridge camp. A mob hanged Collins at a telephone pole and burned his clothing before dawn. Burgmeister died in hospital from shotgun wounds. Courtney died on the scene. Local reports say violence followed the double shooting and arson, with lingering fear of further unrest.

Launch Power Boat Montana Sets River Shipping Plan

The tug Montana, built by Guthrie & Company in Montana, was launched on Monday. It will haul railway materials down the Missouri river to McKenzie county, with service between Williston and Wild Cow Creek mouth. A smaller tug joins soon. both will complete in one day round trips once power plant completion and capstan placement finish.

Father Dies in Denver After Ill Patient

Chas Mansfield received the news of his father William Mansfield’s sudden death at the Denver home of his son. The deceased was seventy six years old and had been ill for some time, though death came unexpectedly.

The Williston band ahowed a full Sunday program at Star Theatre with an outstanding 2 piano duet by Miss Wheeler and Miss Hougen. A Baldwin piano enhanced the performance of a difficult piece. County commissioners are in session this week.

President McVey praised community display booths at railway stations and noted the local booth was cleaned and reassembled. Big blaze at Culbertson Montana destroys multiple blocks

A Tuesday afternoon fire starting in the Huxol drug store basement in Culbertson swept through the Evans block destroying the Evans hotel Fagle saloon post office Edmon’s store and the Standard Publishing Company. Damage estimated at about 875000 with most stocks lost and insurance likely to cover losses.

J Arthur Cunningham resigns after seven years heading the local office for E J Lander Company and plans to start a land and loan business in the Rawson block. H D Lander from the Minot office is here temporarily to oversee Williston affairs. successor for Cunningham’s post is not yet announced.

Williston Company Inspected Impressively by Officer

Company E of the North Dakota National Guard held a Saturday inspection at Gates Hall with 35 men in full service dress. Lt. Col. Tarleson commended the unit, while Sarg. Rock will conduct military instruction in Williston April 14 to 20 for officers and enlisted men.

Great Northern officials visit on spring inspection tour

President C. R. Gray of the Great Northern Railway Company arrived with a party of vice presidents and senior officials for a few hours Thursday on a system wide spring inspection tour. Local business leaders met them and escorted the group on a short auto tour of the city.

Ice Jam Breaks as Missouri River Recedes

After a major ice jam broke below the city last week the Missouri River's waters fell to a normal stage. Ice filled the river Friday and Saturday then largely cleared by Sunday morning. By noon the channel iced again from a far upper gorge, but by Monday afternoon the river was clearer and most ice had passed. A large amount of timber and bridge materials rode the current, some used west of town after the break-up.
