Lynching of Black Suspect After Montana Sheriff Slain
In Sheridan county Montana a colored man J C Collins killed Sheriff Courtney and Deputy Burgmeister after resisting arrest at a Mondak bridge camp. A mob hanged Collins at a telephone pole and burned his clothing before dawn. Burgmeister died in hospital from shotgun wounds. Courtney died on the scene. Local reports say violence followed the double shooting and arson, with lingering fear of further unrest.

Ice Jam Breaks as Missouri River Recedes
After a major ice jam broke below the city last week the Missouri River's waters fell to a normal stage. Ice filled the river Friday and Saturday then largely cleared by Sunday morning. By noon the channel iced again from a far upper gorge, but by Monday afternoon the river was clearer and most ice had passed.
