Williston Miner Killed At Front In European War

Dick Burns formerly a noted local miner was killed fighting for the Allies in the European war. He met his death in Flanders, exact location omitted by war offices. Burns was well liked in Williston and had worked at the Black Diamond mine before enlisting. A Dawson letter from Louis Dawson, a former local resident now in Allied service, mentions more work than fighting and reports German defeat sentiment among troops. He asks for Prince Albert and tobacco sent to him.

Dr A E McGaw Buried Yesterday in Williston

Dr Andrew Ernest McGaw born 1875 in Ottawa City Canada died April 1 1917 at 42 after a year of illness. He practiced dentistry in Williston for nine years and was a respected community member and churchgoer. He leaves a wife Margaret Anabel McLennan and son Charles Emerson along with a sister and four uncles. The funeral was held at Congregational Church with local ministers officiating.

Williston residents rally to support the government as war with Germany looms. Captain Evans and Lieutenant Jeffrey organize a reserve training company in Company E with J W Jackson coordinating. Efforts to promote pacifism fail as a group of signers face strong opposition at church and in the community.

Williston merchant finds way to win mail order customers

Williston merchant T. C. Hutchinson displayed 3 500 catalogs in his window and gave away two phonographs to attract customers. Carrol Petty and Ruth Blaisdell won the prizes as the campaign boosted mail order sales, with many catalogs arriving from town and beyond. Hutchinson urges other local merchants to advertise and cooperate to keep business in Williston.
