The Williamsport eighth grade held its promotion exercises Tuesday at the Methodist church before a large audience. Miss Ruth McCabe fainted briefly during the program, then recovered as the event continued. The ceremony featured a ladies quartet, valedictorian Helen Stewart introducing speaker W. O. Schanlaub of Rensselaer, and diplomas presented by Miss Lelia DeMotte. the class, praised for its effort and character.

Junior Senior Reception Honors and Death of Charles Watkins
The Junior Senior reception was hosted at the Hau home with a four course dinner and class colors. Arnold Haun welcomed the Seniors and Robert Smith spoke for the Seniors as Supt. William Davis advised on future highways. The program included readings songs and a class will. Charles E. Watkins, farmer and longtime Warren County resident, died at Lake View hospital at 62 years old after complications prevented a needed operation. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church with Masonic rites and burial in Highland cemetery.

Seniors to Handle High School Annual Next Year
At a Junior class meeting yesterday the class voted for the seniors to manage the high school yearbook next year. No staff officers were elected due to potential member absence and possible additions to the class. The annual yearbook records school activities jokes and yearly progress.

Friday morning at the opening exercises Robert Smith received a five dollar gold piece for best attitude toward school work. The award was donated by Mrs. H. B. Elwood to the school.

Bootleggers Sentenced in Warren County Case
John Smith and Roy Cole, Danville bootleggers, arrested by Sheriff Dutcher and deputies on May 7, were tried in Warren circuit court. Each received six months at the state penal farm, with fines of 500 and 200 dollars respectively. Smith faced the larger penalty due to prior bootlegging offenses. Ed Ferguson’s trial was postponed to September.

Covington Pioneer Julius Loeb Dies at 78
Julius Loeb longtime Covington resident and Covington Odd Fellows member died at his Covington home Sunday morning after months of illness and a mental breakdown. Born in Hamburg in 1845 he came to New York then Attica before settling in Covington in 1866. He married Nancy McManomy in 1871 and had run a dry goods business for over 50 years before retiring.

Chester Van Leer a 16 year old West Lebanon youth went to Danville police with a tale of heroic struggles to save his parents home. After questioning he confessed the story was untrue and admitted selling a stolen bicycle and revolver as well as stealing a toolkit and a blanket. He is being held for further investigation.
