The Warren county primary produced light turnout with just over two thousand Republican votes and 340 for Democrats. Key races included clerk with three near ties and a final Johnson win by five votes after official tally. Sheriff's race led by Avis Dutcher. township contests noted for Trustee and Assessor posts.
The notice lists local government candidates including U S Senator Bever James Bever age, Congressman Wood, Joint Representative Leslie, Prosecuting Attorney Nolin, Auditor Stephens, Treasurer Moffitt, Clerk Bernice Johnson, Sheriff Dutcher, County Assessor Metsker, Surveyor Gregory, Coroner Briggs, and Commissioners Day and Davis.
In Liberty William R. Grames scored 64 to 48 by William Woods. In Mound township Harve Clem earned 44 and Perl Printy 42. In the senatorial race Samuel M. Ralston led easily with 248 votes while Charles F. Howard had 16, Jesse Sanders 14, Bernard Shively 15, and Dan W. Simms 47.
Edward Bullock and Herman Day escaped from Warren county jail last Thursday night and were recaptured Friday afternoon in a ravine near Vine eight miles east of Attica. Deputy Sheriff Sam Frame and County Clerk Wm. Cowgill apprehended them as they prepared a meal. They surrendered without resistance and were returned to jail, arriving Saturday.
Local attorney Edwin F. McCabe has filed his declaration with the secretary of state as a Democratic candidate for renomination to the Appellate Court. He previously ran four years ago and was defeated with the state ticket, but now seeks the party’s full north half vote.
The Democratic state convention meets in Indianapolis on Wednesday and Thursday May 31 and June 1. Delegates from Warren County named are Stanley Biggs, Dr. J A Simms, A W Brown and Wm H Eberhardt. More Democrats likely to attend.
Mrs Miriam McDonald was shopping and visiting in Attica on Monday, enjoying local storefronts and civic surroundings.
W L Schools closed Tuesday with the annual commencement events. The 10 member graduating class includes Ruth E. Davies Mary E. Grant Zola G. Clem Geneva L. Mong Ruth E. Crawford Laura M. Foster Walter K. Crow John F. Allen Laurence Simmermen and Ernest E. Pence. The Junior Senior reception occurred at the B and R Hotel Friday night. Rev J N Clark delivered the baccalaureate sermon. Class night followed Monday. Prof H G Gough of DePauw University gave the commencement address on Tuesday.
The will of the late John Hopkins, who died at his Attica home last Tuesday, was probated in Covington Friday. Frank Swanson, married to a granddaughter of the deceased, was named executor. Bond filed and approved. The estate is to be sold and the proceeds divided equally among daughters Louise I. Peck Amanda J. McCord of Attica and Eunice A. Hogan of the county. Whickear and Whitehall are attorneys for the executor.
Judge Henneger of Lafayette presided yesterday over the arson case of Alonzo Stephens. After argument for a new trial, the motion was overruled and Stephens was sentenced to two to twenty one years. He maintained his innocence in open court.
Mr and Mrs W P Holmes and their son Lloyd arrived from Danville on Tuesday to vote while Lloyd stayed to spend the day with friends and relatives.
The Williamsport Tigers defeated the Danville Grays 7 to 2 in the season opener. A good crowd attended as enthusiasm builds for the new lineup and a promising season ahead.
Miss Lela Nav head of the Music and Art department will present a school music program at Community Hall next Thursday night. The program includes songs by all grades and the high school and will run a little over an hour. General admission is 25 cents. A complete program appears on the last page.
Duncan Tigers of Lafayette travel to Williamsport next Sunday for a game at High Field. The Tigers are a lively squad and expect a strong challenge for the locals. Williamsport will use the same battery as last Sunday with possible lineup tweaks. A large crowd is anticipated.
Kenneth Evans son of Mr and Mrs Cyrus Evans died at Lake View hospital Danville after several weeks of illness. The body was brought to the Evans home in this city last night.
James McKinzie, from near Winthrop, visited his niece Mrs. B O Hudler on Tuesday signaling a family gathering in the region.
Sanford Milligan, a respected Pine Village farmer, was found dead in the Wabash River near Connersville. Identification came after views by locals. obituary lists ten living children and surviving siblings. Funeral services were held May 1, 1922, at the Pine Village M E church, burial at Mound cemetery.
