A major blaze at Attica’s light and water plant last Saturday destroyed the electrical system, threatening city services. Firefighters confined the damage to the plant, with insurance covering 14,000 and plans under way for a new plant costing about 100,000 funded by private donations from banks and residents.
A dark last Saturday windstorm caused heavy damage to buildings and telephone lines. The Miller elevator roof collapsed, torn off and blown about a block away, with no injuries reported along the path. Service to neighboring towns was briefly suspended due to downed lines.
A social event at the home of Mr and Mrs K Clark near West Lebanon Tuesday night featured a party hosted by their son Franklin in honor of Claire Day home on furlough from the Great Lakes Naval Training School. The evening included games music and an early dinner with guests Emily Bord Audrey Miller Pearl Dennis Hazel Steifel Edith Taninsod Edith Keister Jane Smith Sara Trott Freda Watkins John Demarry James Pepe George Madden and Harbaugh.
Three more of Warren County's young men answered the call to serve the nation this week William Briggs and Forrest Renville of Pence and Fred Lewis of this place. The first two enlisted in the infantry and were sent to Camp Green at Charlotte NC Monday. The latter took the medical TSAR and left yesterday afternoon for Camp Oglethorpe GA.
County Chairman Bert Fleming organizes township teams for the Liberty Loan drive beginning April 6. Each township will appoint ten assistants, totaling 152 canvassers to promote bonds across Warren County. The county team lists assistants by township and assigns speakers and publicity chairs to support the nationwide effort.
The Women Liberty Loan Committee lists county officers led by Mrs. Richard Stephenson and a long roster of township and town village chairmen. The article notes farm labor priorities in the March 29 draft call, stressing preserving farm work while meeting the 17 percent quota of the first draft.
Oscar Allen 56, formerly of Pine township, died at his Oxford home at 3 am after years with dropsy. Survived by wife, daughter Mrs. Martin Carr, son Earl, two brothers Qozro of Oklahoma and Henry near Winthrop, three sisters Mrs. Shackleton Attica Mrs. Arbuckle and Mrs. Shackleton Pine Village. Funeral Saturday 10 am at Oxford Methodist Church with burial west of Oxford.
Mrs. Sarah Amanda Holtz, widow of John Holtz, died Tuesday at age 70 after a long illness. Born February 9, 1840 in Pennsylvania, she moved to Indiana early in life and witnessed Warren County shift from swampy fields to a prosperous farming area with year round roads. Funeral services were held at Locust Grove church yesterday afternoon with interment in the nearby cemetery.
Mrs. Nellie Wyatt wife of Charles Wyatt of near Tab died at Lakeview hospital Danville after a brief illness. She was 38 years 7 months 17 days and had surgery for appendicitis. Survived by husband and two sons aged 15 and 10. Funeral Sunday at Tab Christian church Rev A W Jackman Attica officiating. Interment Jordan township cemetery near Pence. Frank Davis was transacting business in Danville Saturday.
William J. Woods dropped in to declare his candidacy for the Liberty township trustee nomination, pending Democratic party support at the May 7 primary. He just completed his first term, earning taxpayer approval for careful handling of expenses and steady governance.
Rae Fleming joins the auditor race as the seventh candidate on the Resubuean slate. He pledges a fight to the finish and is expected to attract votes. Shorty Clark considers settling in Hungry Hollow away from city life. Attica visitors Mrs Metsker and two others spent Saturday afternoon in the city.
Washington township American Red Cross unit to hold a large street sale in Williamsport on May 23 with auctions from a threshing machine to pins. Articles offered. listings sought from residents, with options to donate fully or take a percent of sale price. Communities urged to participate for a noble cause.
Will of Samuel Murphy probated last week leaves entire estate to wife Sarah A. Murphy for her lifetime. After her death the estate is to be divided among six children Clayton W. Clare F. Flora A. Wilts FE. Eihe EL. and Otis A. A $350 bequest is made to Erie E. The wife and son Otis act as executors. Witnesses include James Oeman, Robert Fix and Wilber Morgan.
