Seven Warren county youths enlisted this week joining the aviation corps at Kelly Field in Texas and the coast artillery in Columbus Ohio. Harry Marlatt from this city and Eugene Huildenbrand son of County Treasurer Frank Hildenbrand left for San Antonio to join Kelly Field. Albert Butt and Wilmer Wagner sailed for Camp Sereben near Savannah Georgia to enter the ordinance department. John Hamim of Vincennes and Wyrle Reynolds of West Lebanon departed for Columbus Ohio to enlist in the coast artillery. Ken Wallace of West Lebanon also left for San Antonio to join Kelly Field. Additional draftees expected in coming days.

A U S Army private Nathaniel Phebus stationed at Ft Snelling struck a man at Covington’s Big Four depot after a derisive remark about his citizenship. The assailant, a pro German sympathizer, fled as indignant locals mocked him and sent cigars and a letter of thanks to Phebus.
A soldier writes home about receiving Christmas boxes from his mother and Mrs. Wilson, sharing meals with bunkmates, and studying for a gunner exam. He mentions insurance, monthly costs, and hopes for status as a first class gunner, asking about family news and local events in Williamsport.
The two room Marshfield school house burned to the ground early Tuesday. Fire officials say the blaze started from a defective chimney and spread quickly, destroying books and school property. The building had been condemned by the state fire marshal and insurance covered the township. Trustee Ed Wurtsbaugh plans to equip the Red Men hall for school use while arrangements are made.
Wilbur Cheadle seven year old son of Mr and Mrs Morris Cheadle of a farm four miles south of Green Hill died after a horse struck him while in a barn stall. The injury occurred Tuesday and he died at St Elizabeth hospital at 10 15 PM. Doctors Imth Otterbein and Dris coll Lafayette performed the operation. The family and community mourn his death.
Three boxes of high explosives and brass percussion caps were found in a car load of oats at the Big Four yards in Lafayette on Monday afternoon. Oats loaded at Earl Park were bound for Indianapolis but a car break required transferring the grain to another car. Eddie Scott and helpers found the caps during the transfer and cautioned by Superintendent Lederer. Railroad authorities ordered the car held for investigation.
County Food Administrator M A McDonald publishes extracts from recent bulletins. Bread limits set at 9 cents per loaf and 17 cents for two. sugar at 9 cents per pound with a 3 pound monthly per capita allowance. Excess prices deemed unfair. Flour bulletin raises farmer sales to 25 pounds biweekly under fifty fifty rule. Mullion and lamb restriction lifted until April 15. Broilers under two pounds prohibited. Farm sales and lunches to observe meat less days. schools churches clubs lodges to comply.
Purdue University and County Emergency Agent R I Harbaugh arrange a government shipment of guaranteed seed corn to Warren County within about three weeks. The program aims to address a county seed shortage, with seed tested by experts. Farmers should order early by phone. first come, first served. The agent’s office hours are listed as late afternoon.
David A. Orr and Velma M. Bottorff were married in the city Wednesday by Justice of the Peace James Anderson. Orr, a prosper Mr. Orr is a farmer living south of Boswell in Prairie township. Bottorff has been keeping house for him for two years. The couple is well known and receives broad good wishes.
Miss Anna Cline sister of William Joseph and James Cline died last Thursday after a lingering illness. She aged 59 and lived with her brothers since moving from Hamilton Ohio at age ten to Warren county. She aided the Cline homestead and was known for tenderness and deep faith. Funeral services were held Saturday with interment in Attica Catholic cemetery.
A local fire company fundraiser raised 215.50 to buy new gear for firefighters hats coats hip-boats and smoke masks. The men previously faced dangerous conditions with minimal equipment and poverty exposure, yet Williamsport’s volunteers remain ready and deserving of the best gear.
The town lines up personnel changes to trim expenses. A new CG superintendent will manage the water plant and marshal duties replace Joe Russel. Rod Man receives higher pay for wearing the star. Peter Fortier, longtime street cleaner, is dismissed.
Ler mond McKinzie son of Mr and Mrs Harry McKinzie of near the Kickapoo Gravel Co plant has been appointed County Agent of Fountain County by the Board of Education to fill the vacancy created by Mr Rosencrans resignation. McKinzie, a longtime resident, graduated from Attica High School and attended Purdue University. He has since held farming supervision posts in Ohio and Indiana and directed agricultural work for Owensville and surrounding townships. He will resign Owensville and move to Covington to assume his new duties.
Claude Grimes was tried for stealing chickens from Lindsey Odle and found guilty after a long deliberation. A $15 fine and fifteen days in jail were imposed by Judge Berry, with special permission to work for the sheriff to support his family. The Bertha Gerard vs Frank Gerard case was heard but no decree issued.
