Boyd Johnson, a Marine in France, writes home from the Western Front detailing fierce fighting against German forces, diverse combat conditions, and the morale boost from American and French support. He notes trenches, gas masks, loot from captured enemy gear, and his optimism about decorations and continued homefront backing.
Rev. A G Leazenby former Crawfords ville district elder now pastor of Trinity M E Lafayette has been named among one hundred ministers nationwide chosen to answer General Pershing for immediate overseas service He has applied and awaits Washington action and a physical exam before duty.
Charles L. Mourer and Jessie B. Butler were married in West Lebanon Monday by Rev. J. L. Jones. Both are longtime residents near West Lebanon. he 45 and she 41, each widowed. Best wishes pour in from a large circle of friends.
The notice lists Warren county men notified for the draft call under Provost Marshall Crowder. It names twenty eight listed volunteers along with several numbers and names, noting alternates are not designated and changes may occur as the process continues.
Camp at Battle Ground invites boys ages 10 to 17 for an eleven day session from August 2 to 11 1918. Registration is five dollars with meals arranged via hotel partners and volunteer transport possible. Leaders from Covington and Colfax oversee tents plays swimming and daily routines.
H H Bertrand suffered a head injury after falling about sixteen feet from a roof while painting a crib on his Liberty township farm. He struck the back of his head on a log, lost consciousness, and was treated by Dr. Stephenson before being moved to town for recovery.
Private Glenn R. Boswell wed Miss Ruth Fisher in a simple military ceremony at the Methodist parsonage conducted by Rev. J. E. McCloud. Boswell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Boswell, trains at Ft. Benjamin Harrison and expects to be sent to the eastern coast soon. The groom reported to duty Monday morning. Attendants include Attorney General and Mrs. Ele Stansbury of Indianapolis visiting local friends.
Mrs. James McClaflin died at her Attica home on Sunday morning at 8 30 after years of heart trouble and stomach catarrh. Born Mary Elizabeth MeceClaflin September 30 1850 in Whitley County Indiana she was 67 years old. She raised three children from her first marriage to Joseph Braden and later married James McClaflin of Warren County. Funeral was held at the Attica Presbyterian church with Rev A W Jackman and Dr J G Campbell assisting. Her survivors include her husband a son and daughter two half brothers and many relatives. She moved to Attica from Williamsport and helped manage her husband’s finances contributing to their fortune. She was misunderstood at times but valued for her generous heart and high ideals.
The Epworth League outlines six day summer institutes for Methodist youth across the country with Battle Ground Indiana hosting July 22 to 28. Dr Dan S Brummitt leads in Epworth League Methods Centenary Movement Bible study is taught by J J Rapp with a wide faculty and no registration fee. The program emphasizes leadership training and reconstruction aims postwar.
William Pearlman son of Alec Pearlman of Attica buys the Princess theatre and reopens it Saturday after J C Rucker closed the house when Fred F Ritenour enlisted and trained at Purdue University. Pearlman is young but ambitious, aiming to build a profitable stable cinema.
