Farmers Drive To Be Jan 1

The Warren County Farm Bureau plans a January first membership drive in cooperation with the Indiana Farm Bureau. A state representative will assist each township and meetings will be held December eve. Each 18-farmer community will elect a three man and three woman committee to canvass. Howard B Campbell named County Manager to oversee county efforts and organize township campaigns toward reaching 1000 members in 1924 with a five dollar membership.

Route Carriers Not Required To Deliver On Christmas Day

Postmaster General issues order exempting rural route carriers from Christmas Day trips. The change allows mail carriers to enjoy the holiday along with the public, ending the prior annual route delivery.

Indiana University ROTC stands as distinguished college unit

Williamsport students Gordon G. LaVanway and Rollin R. Shannon belong to the Indiana University ROTC, a nationally renowned unit in the Fifth Army Corps area. The IU ROTC is the only college organization in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana to hold the war department's distinguished college rating. More than 900 IU students train, with 72 seniors in advanced courses and 14 seniors commissioned last year into reserve corps.

Local School News Highlights From Attica Area

The basketball team plans a return game at Monitor on Friday with a big Attica base shuttle. Vic returns to action after a 30 29 loss to Attica last Saturday and the juniors beat Attica J H S on a curtain raiser but struggled on the floor. Christmas trees fill rooms and a group photo day occurred last Friday. The Latin class shifts to posters this term and the school closes December 21 then reopens December 31. The week includes a program day with glee club carols and multiple recitations and dramas.

Famous Duhme Case To Be Tried Here Soon

The Ophelia Duhme will contest in a major suit over a 500000 estate. Judge Williams heard arguments in Lafayette and issued a ruling, with a second hearing planned there Friday. Heirs include James Fowler and Moses Fowler Chase, the latter being an insane patient. Local counsel H D Billings prosecutes, Ele Stansbury and E F McCabe defend.

Mahaffey Obituary Highlights Indiana Birth to Texas Service

Abner Dooley Mahaffey died December 2 1923 at 3 am after a lengthy illness from dropsy of the heart. Born March 5 1855 in Clinton County Indiana he was 68 years 9 months and 29 days old. He served as Neches Texas postmaster and justice of the peace and was a longtime member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Methodist Church. He married Sarah Elizabeth Moore in Williamsport Indiana and left a wife daughter a foster daughter three sisters and three brothers. He faced death with faith and cheer, whistling “All the Way My Saviour Leads Me.”
