President Warren G. Harding died at 9 47 last evening at the Palace Hotel San Francisco after a period of critical illness. Anaplexy caused the death and he was near to beginning a campaign for a second nomination. He is survived by the widow.
A trio of preserved letters surfaces in the Eva Moore collection. One 12 page January 31 1853 letter from a New York great aunt details her husband s last illness. A January 29 1857 friendship note and a July 22 1868 letter from Jas per McNett at McMinnville Tenn also survive. The writings remain legible and well preserved.
Miss Lorene Karst and M. G. Smith were married Tuesday morning at eight in St Frances Xavier church Attica. Father Oberholtz officiated with Miss Helen Horn and Glen Herricks as attendants. Miss Karst, daughter of Mrs Kate Karst, is a Williamsport High School 1918 graduate. Mr Smith works as an electrician at the National Car Coupler in Attica.
A teachers examination was held here Saturday with many teachers writing in multiple subjects. Participants include Gladys Biggs Katherine Mullinix Anna Allen Florence Hall Lora Thorne Nettie Kite Edith Evans Helen Horn Pauline Thompson Ruth Blind and Bertha Cronkhite.
Alva Collyer and his son Ralph returned to Harvey after several days with Mrs Collyer. Ned McCabe returned from Indianapolis Monday evening.
Dr E C Wareing editor of the Western Christian Advocate will address the Attica Methodist Rally next Tuesday August 7 The program also features Hon C C Holmes and Dr Frank K Dougherty with district staff and quartet performances A noon basket dinner and social time are planned Dr A G Leazenby will preside and guide the event
Harold Taylor attorney for Bert McBride receiver for the Dollings company of Indiana says the industrials under Dollings control are sound and can be saved via receiverships and later reorganization. He notes the danger lies in Dollings assets. receiverships will keep plants running until liquidation and eventual independent reorganization.
Dale Kerr a World War veteran and son of Mrs Mary Kerr Attica formerly served with Fountain county s first contingent in France has been granted compensation for sickness incurred in service. He recently received over 1900 dollars back pay and a monthly compensation of 60 dollars for his incapacity.
George Junior Biggs, 15 months, of West Lebanon, died at a Danville hospital from poisoning after swallowing tablets from a fly killer canister. The mother found the child had removed sponges and at least three tablets. Coroner’s inquest ruled death accidental due to poisoning.
Payment of court costs in the Sailor versus Blind case was made Wednesday of last week after the case was moved from Fountain to Tippecanoe county. Records show the suit was filed in June 1905 and questions remain why payment came only now. A letter and check were sent to Fountain’s County Clerk Eugene Bodine from Wm. M. Jackson. Tippecanoe officials sent checks to two officials who no longer held Fountain office, which were returned.
Harold Stump son of File Stump of Tab was killed instantly last Thursday when the touring car he rode in crashed with a heavy truck east of Boswell. Driver Herbert Pleasant of Boswell piloted the truck. coroner’s inquest exonerated both drivers as the crash was ruled accidental. Funeral services were held Saturday at Locust Grove with burial in the nearby cemetery.
Miss Gladys Collyer from Danville is spending her summer vacation here with her parents, Mr. Alva Collyer, during the season.
Hon Ele Stansbury will deliver the principal address at the Yeddo Old Settlers meeting on Thursday August 16. The event draws five to ten thousand attendees and features are a baby contest a basket dinner and plentiful sandtown melons in a picnic atmosphere.
World famous artist and cartoonist Sydney Smith of the Andy Gump comics stayed at the Williamsport hotel with a party. He reportedly earned a million and a half annually in Chicago and travels with a Rolls Royce and Marmon cars.
Waren county horse shoe pitchers hold a meeting on Saturday August 4 at 7 00 p m at Casad grove Williamsport to organize the county team for the state fair and arrange a try out contest. All interested players are urged to attend and each township should have representation.
Warren County Farm Bureau directors will meet at the County Agent Office in Williamsport next Saturday at 1 30 PM. Every township director is urged to attend. The secretary will report on rebates for Warren County livestock shippers.
Mrs Louis Pitcher went to Battle Ground on Monday afternoon to attend the camp meeting this week.
County Assessor James Metsker, aged seventy, was surprised with a birthday celebration on Sunday. Guests included Fred Stingle and family, Lloyd Foster and family of Pine Village, Roy Williams and family of West Point, Harry Wagner and family of Williamsport, Cliff Milligan and wife near Pine Village, Roy Metsker and wife, and a Mr. Sellers of Lafayette.
The school board voted to start the term on Monday September 10, one week later than before. Miss Ella Sutton resigned after an injury at her brother Guy’s Danville home, with a replacement still to be chosen. The annual coal contract was awarded to Milt Keister at five dollars per ton in the bin.
Tidal Lodge No. 36 Covington celebrates the Knights of Pythias Golden Anniversary at Rogers Park on August 8. Incoming Chancellor Commander Elmer Bassett will deliver the principal address, with music games and dancing. Knights urged to bring families and attend this major event.
George Peck and his daughters Miss Florence Peck and Mrs Will Johns son with her husband and two children depart Sunday for Canistota South Dakota to visit Mr Peck s sister Mrs Frankie Scatlet. They plan a three week camping car trip along the route. Mrs Clair Haun Miss Clara Lou drove to Veedersburg Wednesday.
Daniel V. Smith former Attica meat market owner died suddenly at his home southeast of Stone Bluff about four Saturday morning, 23 hours after brother Leroy Smith’s death. He leaves Myrtle Wilson, Mabel McClain, six children, a brother John Smith and sister Mrs J W Linton. Funeral held at Attica M E church. buried Riverside cemetery.
The A B C Club held its annual picnic Sunday July 29 at Zack Balsar’s home along Pine Creek. A noon dinner was served by the ladies from well stocked baskets. Attendees included Gus Peterson and family, Jewell Young and family, E E Anderson and children, Lew Jones and family, Joe Green and son, Zack Balsar and family, Avis Dutcher and family, Wm Moffitt and daughter Geneva, Edna Painter, Anna Dalton, Ruby Henry, Franklin Biggs, Elsie and Isie, and Lorene Brier with William and Rachel.
Robert Kerr of Rock Island Illinois and Dale Kerr of Lafayette were in Williamsport on business Wednesday.
