The account details young hunters using spears to catch approaching birds in inland lakes near shorelines. It notes exuberant but cruel chase reflecting savage traits, with examples of eider duck hunting and objections to the behavior as it compares Eskimo and Indian youths. The narrator recalls sledge journeys and reactions to the sport.
Descriptions of Eskimo youths preferring simple winter amusements over hunting, from Youth's Companion. Boys craft sledges from ice, carve walrus ivory into toys, and play dominoes with ivory pieces brought by whites. Older folks join some games, while skating and snowshoeing are uncommon due to extreme cold and rough ice.
A faded reminiscence recalls Soiled Smith, nom de plume Bolied Smith, and his life in Wyoming Territory.
