A fragmented OCR piece describes blazing flames in autumn woods from May-like warm spells to sudden winds. It notes trees shedding leaves, rising heat, and distant rumbling, with references to smoke, air quality, and shifting weather as fires threaten nearby valleys and hills.
Eyewitness accounts describe a vast forest fire sweeping seven sparsely settled counties in late May. Winds drove flames through dry woods, forcing residents from homes and trapping people in holes and cellars as smoke darkened skies from New Jersey to the Ohio River. Destruction hit towns near Porterville and Jeems, with powder mills and timbered regions suffering heavy losses. The episode follows earlier reports of fires in Canada and western New York, linked to a season of drought and supply concerns for irrigation.
