New York Society Ballscene and Notable Residents
A lengthy portrait of New York society at a grand New Year’s ball outlines the influence of Ward McAllister and the social gatekeeping by Vanderbilt and Astor circles. It names Mrs William K Vanderbilt, Mrs Pierre Lorillard Jr., Mrs Roosevelt, Mrs J J Sloane, and Miss Caroline Astor among leading hosts and attendees, noting shifts as newer wealth enters society and traditional dynasties face new entrants and scrutiny. The piece also touches on public perceptions, fashion, and the evolving role of women in society and wealth.
