My First Duel A Youthful Shot at Bravery
A reminiscence of a boy aged about twelve who accepted a duel challenge from Chalkley Ferra at school. They prepared with improvised weapons and a pistol loaded with pewter and powder. A misfire and a heavy collision left the narrator wounded and Chalkley demoralized. They rode away in a buggy to reveal the incident to Chalkley's father, ending with the narrator being sent home to Philadelphia and vowing never to seek such danger again.
