Mrs. A S Burroughs recounts a brutal confrontation at a ranch near Mount Shasta. An Indian man tries to seize her and threaten violence to retrieve her child as miners intervene, Jack is driven from the community, and the narrator recalls the day with lasting horror. The tale ends with the community aiding her and Santa miners donating for her boy, while she vows never to forget.
A Wilshire park tale recounts Jasper the collie and Sandie the Skye terrier. While boat drifting, Sandie falls behind and drowns in despair, but Jasper slides off the stern and, with Sandie clinging to his neck, swims to shore delivering the terrier to safety in the deer park.
