Capt Howard Patterson of New York is appointed admiral of the Haitian navy under General Legetime and travels to Port au Prince to assume command. The report notes his seafaring skill and prep for immediate leadership.
The piece critiques Judge Sluss and discusses the late appointment of the first assistant secretary of the Interior, opposing Sluss’s candidacy while detailing Wichita and Kansas political dynamics. It covers land cessions to tribes, oil and railroad interests, Atchison stock moves linked to Gould and Huntington, and debates over the Springer land bill and Atchison’s future.
Boston dispatch reports the Atchison situation centers on a $100,000 note renewal request to the City Bank of New York, which the bank resisted. Market chatter suggests a consolidation with the Gould system as the quickest fix, with directors needing public confidence. Also notes a competitive examination in Newton for cadetships to West Point and Annapolis, with details on ages and overseeing officials.
A fragmented political screed references Judge Chandler and Republican loyalties, recounting a claim that Chandler was not elected by Republicans and that a Texas U S marshal appointment sought via Senator Reagan was rebuffed. The text throws in a Washington street scene list of professions and locations with no clear cohesive event.
A fragmentary text blends poetry with scattered notes on post mortem work, Kansas farming tips, hog raising, and state agricultural updates. It mentions Wichita Exoue Iron 172, J Meade, and references to Kansas wheat prospects, dairy breeds, and lime as timber preservative, all from a late 19th or early 20th century newspaper page.
A garbled Kansas scene notes rising crop prospects in northwest Kansas with reports of large allain crop, high grass in localities and heavy baled hay. Mentions Rawlins County farmer, Topeka editor, and local officials amid a series of misprints and fragmented lines.
