Mildred Babe Didrikson Zaharias 42 died Wednesday night in a Galveston hospital ending a three year fight with cancer. She had told family and doctors she was not giving up and was kept alive with an oxygen tent and IV feeding. She was celebrated as the greatest all around woman athlete and renowned golfer.
Whitewright High School Tigers travel to Farmersville Friday seeking a third straight victory after a 39 to 13 win over Leonard. Bill Polk shone in speed and defense while Jack Hye Cock continued strong play. Next home game is Oct 19 against Rouse City with several conference matchups upcoming. Admission is 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for students. advance tickets 0.75 and 0.30 are available locally.
Rev. Fred Waldrop of Avinger accepted the pastorate at First Baptist Church here after months without a pastor. Waldrop and his wife and son will move to Whitewright and begin work October 14. He studied at East Texas State Teachers College Commerce and Marshall Baptist College.
Sherman county FHA office will accept Roughage program applications but will not issue purchase certificates. FFA supervisor William G. Barr announced the move after state FHA director Walter T. McKay ordered suspending certificates due to higher than anticipated cash needs. County supervisors will file daily tonnage reports on accepted applications as the program is re appraised for further action.
Civil defense began distribution in Battle Creek Michigan of a new national plan for Amer ica in case of enemy attack. The plan updates the 1950 version and shows who at federal state and local levels is to do what when and by what authority. Appendices include tests of the 1950 act model state act FCDA regulations and delegations to federal agencies.

The Whitewright Parent-Teacher Association begins a member drive at 50 cents per person led by chairwoman Mrs. Wallace Wilson. Members to sign up include Mrs. William White Mrs. Lakey Edwards Mrs. Clyde Little and Earl Blanton. Meetings start with a high school library session on Tuesday Oct 9 and continue on the second Tuesday each month.
Rev. J. W. Polk announces the First Methodist Church school rally day at 10 a.m. on Sunday September 30. The program features a 20 minute day program and promotion events for the children with Mrs. S. T. Montgomery Jr leading assisted by 16 children and youth. The theme is Let the Light Shine. Polk also invites all to Sunday school and church services at 10:55 to hear Home Talent at Work.
Mr and Mrs J W Gordon celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with open house at their Pilot Grove home from 2 to 5 p m on Sunday. Married Sept 30 1906 in Pilot Grove she formerly Miss Pearlie Vernon born Weston Collin County and came to the Desert as a child he a Desert native both attend Crossroads Presbyterian Church where he is choir director they have two sons Vernon of Pilot Grove and Bill of Denison and one granddaughter Pam aged two.
London case reports John Patrick Walsh smiling at the judge as he described throwing a television set through a shop window after a defective set failed to work. He paid 20 pounds in damages to the shop and 1 shilling to the court for malicious damage.

Sherman Texas Jenkins 33 of Whitewright is charged with negligent homicide in Grayson County Court at Law after a head on collision near Bells on September 2 that killed 74 year old Denison resident Jim D. Melton. Melton's spouse and two others were hospitalized.
Washington The Agriculture Department said net loss from farm price support operations for the year ended June 30 totaled 974 767 365, up 175 705 901 from the prior year. The Commodity Credit Corporation held 8 257 308 000 invested in farm products as of June 30. The natural colors of cotton are brown green cream and white.
Mrs Coroia Ingram Cox 85 died at her home after a year long heart trouble. Born April 6 1871 she lived in Whitewright most of her life where her husband operated a grocery. Surviving Pascal Cox Ruth Cox Bailey and others. Oldest son Will Cox died in 1919 from World War I wounds. Funeral plans not yet made. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Lee Starr were held at Barnhart Chapel. Burial followed in Alton Cemetery at Denton. She died September 21 and was born May 19, 1894 in Denton County. Surviving husband Fred Starr Sr and children Fred Starr Jr and Mrs. W. O. Wheatley. brothers John Maxwell H B Maxwell C E Maxwell R J Maxwell. sisters R L Johnson O D Johnson Jack Grey. seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held for Donald Alan Price the little son of Mr. and Mrs. El bert Price of Whitewright at Owen's Chapel Church with Lefton Hester officiating. Burial followed in Owen's Chapel Cemetery. Born December 1954 he died Friday in a Bonham hospital after an earlier surgery. Survived by his parents and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Love of Owen's Chapel community.
Funeral services set for 3 p m Friday at Shady Grove Baptist Church nine miles south of Whitewright for Larry Clark Cole man four year old son of Charles Cole man and Florence Clark Coleman. He died Wednesday at home from cancer in Sherman born August 22 1952. Survivors include his parents one brother Dale Coleman and grandparents C L Clark and Mr and Mrs B L Coleman of Blue Ridge community.
Funeral services for Samuel W. Donihoo age 78 were conducted Wednesday at Earnheart Funeral Chapel with Rev. H Caraway and Rev. J W Polk presiding. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. He died Monday at his daughter’s home near Trenton. Survivors include five daughters Mrs Willie Griffin and Mrs C C Miller among others. Born in Mississippi November 18 1877 he married Lee Edna McCann February 22 1902. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church IOOF and Masonic Lodges.
Ernest Smith of the City Water Department notes only 13.49 inches of rainfall has fallen year to date with most of it before June 1. Months from June through September show minimal rain, wells and pastures drying, while 1955 recorded 26.32 inches by September.

Passaic County Prosecutor Charles Joelson announced that about 200 indictments will be dismissed. They date from 1871 to 1900 and cover crimes from horse and chicken thefts to failure to paint a prepaid portrait.
Mrs Ruth Simms found a Siamese cat in her deep freeze yesterday after opening it the cat had climbed in the day before. The pet suffered no ill effects and was unharmed.
