Survey Recommends 50 Percent Cut in Federal Taxes
The Committee on Postwar Tax Policy led by Roswell Magill urged an overall federal tax reduction of over 50 percent. Immediate elimination of the 3 percent normal tax on individuals would cut revenue by about 2 billion dollars and free more than 9 million small-income earners. The panel also backs repealing excess profits tax on corporations, capital stock tax, and declared value excess profits tax, with gradual corporate tax reductions. By 1947 or 1948 a 15 to 20 percent individual tax and a similar corporate rate are proposed if spending is curbed, plus shifting estate and gift taxes and gasoline taxes back to states.

Shoe ration decision due this weekend
Washington reports the government will decide this weekend whether to end shoe rationing on October 1. The Leather Bureau favors termination, while OPA and WPB civilian requirements want September production figures before deciding. They fear continued rationing to October 15 or November 1 may be wiser. Leather bureau projects about 30 million pairs monthly by month’s end, near the 1939 rate. You can't keep your mind and your mouth both open at once.
