Texas special session looms as tax hike clash begins
Austin set for the three ring political and legislative circus as the 45th Legislature opens. The Governor seeks 15 million dollars extra revenue through taxes on oil gas sulphur pipelines and utilities with a luxury tax. Senate committee offers cuts and bureau abolitions including liquor control and social service agencies. A school fund revenue shift is debated and observers predict little new tax action or a session deadlock. Texas University reports record enrollment while lawmakers weigh New Deal policy shifts and looming congressional races.
