Legislature Meets As Road Bond Bill Is Debated
Governor Stevenson urges a compromise plan to shift right of way costs for state highways from counties to the state. The proposal, supported by the Texas Highway Commission and Judge Merritt H. Gibson, would have the state pay future rights of way and assume $10.31 million for county donated rights of way, potentially ending the deadlock over the road bond issue. It emphasizes farm to market roads as vital for rural economies and education.

Stevenson outlines plan to fund Texas highway rights of way
Stevenson argues new policy would yield more money to the highway department than a straight 50 50 split of a 10 3 million surplus. He projects 1 million annual right of way needs, 15 acre per mile costs, and by 1935 surplus to 6 5 7 million. The plan would enable 500 to 1000 miles of farm to market roads yearly benefiting farmers and rural Texans. Whitewright merchants offer you better values.
