Snapshots of Mars Life Promised by Large Telescope Plan
Paris reports American scientist B. McAfee and astronomer David Todd plan the largest telescope yet, to be built on McAfee’s Deauville estate using a Chilean mine shaft as the barrel. The device, 50 feet wide, employs a flat iron dish with poured mercury to form a concave mirror. It aims to image Mars from a distance of about 1.5 miles and magnify about 25 million times, enabling a snap shot rather than a time exposure. McAfee says life exists on Mars and expects to prove it in 1924 when Mars is nearest Earth in a century.
