A letter from Mrs. Lucian Andrews of San Bernardino praises The Sun and invites the editor and his wife to California. She plans to visit Caracas on Nov 15 to celebrate Christmas with her daughter, then hopes to spend the next Christmas in Whitewright. She notes a preference for Texas over California.
The local Boy Scouts invite the community to a free stew event Tuesday night Nov 1 in connection with Court of Honor ceremonies. Three kettles of stew and nine gallons of coffee will serve several hundred people. Visitors should bring a bowl cup and spoon. Serving begins at 7 with the Court of Honor to follow. Weather permitting it will be outdoors. otherwise in the American Legion Hall. Scoutmaster Bobby Anderson and assistant Clarence Tillett organize.
Paul Caylor reports a glass jug of water in his car concentrated the sun’s rays and started a fire. He had left the jug in the vehicle while picking cotton and noticed smoke later. The blaze caught cloth gloves in the car near a bale of cotton, but he subdued it before it spread.
The Honey Grove Signal-Citizen relocates editorials to a new building south of the former site destroyed by fire. Printing remains at the Ladonia News plant. The paper bought the Robison tailor shop building, renovated for the newsroom and presses.
A mouse touched a high voltage resistor causing a dramatic short circuit that knocked WISN TV off the air for the day in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The incident ended the station's telecasting for the day and the animal was killed in the event.
A list of donors to the Sam Rayburn Foundation includes tutors who contributed to a barbecue fundraiser. Mr. Rayburn personally thanked contributors, stating he appreciates their kindness beyond words. Donations can be mailed to the Sam Rayburn Foundation in Bonham, Texas.
The Savoy Volunteer Fire Department expects a large turnout for a barbecue on Saturday night October 29 chaired by Claude Strickland to retire the indebtedness on Savoy's fire truck. Tickets cost 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for children under 12. A speech by Speaker Sam Rayburn is set for 8 p.m. Barbecue serving runs 5 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services were held for Oran L. Sears 64 at 2 30 p m with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery Sears died of a heart attack at his farm near town He was born November 27 1890 and married Sadie Carver Surviving relatives include wife one brother two sisters and many nieces nephews and out of town attendees Oscar Pierce 65 former Whitewright businessman died in Monroe Louisiana after a long illness His funeral was at 10 a m in Whitewright with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery Survivors include three sons a daughter a sister a step son and nine grandchildren
Funeral services were held at Fogle West Chapel Houston for Mrs Willa Nell Lipsey 26 burn death in pre dawn Houston home fire. Husband Howard Lipsey was critically burned after rescuing their five children. Lipsey body found near a door presumed trapped while seeking the children. The four surviving children and other family noted.
Relatives here learned last night of the death in Albuquerque New Mexico of George McLean former local resident. He was the brother of the late Charley McLean and uncle to Charley McLean Jr and Miss Hazel McLean. He was also brother in law to Mrs Charley Layman and Mrs Jean Rhea Emerson. Emerson 83 died last Thursday in a Dallas hospital after years of ill health born in McKinney April 9 1872 she was daughter of the late Capt and Ella Foote Rhea married Cliff Emerson in 1894 who preceded her in death 1917. Emerson a Mary Baldwin College graduate was active in Daughters of the American Revolution and Edelweiss Literary Club of McKinney and taught in St Peters Episcopal Church activities.
The Whitewright Tigers travel to Van Alstyne to face the Panthers in the yearly big game. Van Alstyne leads the season so far while Whitewright seeks upset after an improving run, with kickoff at 8:00.
The First Baptist Church will canvass the town to take a religious census for all denominations. Newton Cole, pastor, divides the town into four sections with two workers per block to contact every house. A card will be filled for each family member and churches will receive compiled results. Census begins around 1 o clock.
The Sun lists names of subscribers and payments received for subscriptions. The readout includes numerous individuals such as C. H. Taylor C. J. Davenport L. J. Bryant B. W. Stephens and many others across multiple households and titles.
Survivors include a daughter Mrs. R F Newsome of McKinney two sons Jim Emerson of Cincinnati Ohio Clifton Emerson of Whitewright three grandsons Commander Fitzhugh Newsome Jr in the Pacific Cliff and Jim Emerson of Whitewright and three great grandchildren Ann Jan and Fitzhugh Newsome III of California Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 am at St Peters Episcopal Church in McKinney with Rev Minter B Terrell. Burial followed in Pecan Grove Cemetery.
A caravan of autos will travel to Van Alstyne Friday for Whitewright Tigers versus Van Alstyne Panthers. Decorate downtown 2:00 to 5:00 pm, or until 6:30 pm for late arrivals. caravan departs about 6:45 with police escort. Pep rally and bonfire at American Legion Park Thursday at 7:00 pm.
Chevrolet plans a nationwide display of its 1956 passenger cars on Friday November 4 marking a record sales year. W E Fish general sales manager says the event will be Chevrolet dealers biggest day and a memorable showroom experience for visitors.
