The agriculture department announced state acreage allotments for the 1962 cotton crop. National total 18,101,718 acres. Arizona 370,644 California 826,698 Nevada 3,522 New Mexico 191,310 Oklahoma 947,494 Texas 7,698,169. upland cotton growers vote in a national referendum on December 12 to decide marketing quotas for 1962.
Whitewright children about twenty five will participate in a UNICEF fund drive Tuesday evening. Organized by WSCS First Methodist Church the group collects coins for UNICEF aid with proper identification and UNICEF symbols. Funds support vaccines medicines and nutrition for children in over 100 countries with matched government aid.
Grateful hearts have reason to give thanks for abundant American agriculture this November. The Agricultural Marketing Service notes Turkey marketings will be up about 25 percent and the 1961 cranberry crop is seen 15 percent above average. Also plentiful are apples, potatoes, cabbage, pecans, almonds, pork, vegetable fats and oils, and dry beans, with promotions by producers and industry to aid price and quality.
Dr. Robert J. Fitzgerald of the National Institute of Dental Research reports preliminary findings that tooth decay might spread like a cold. In hamster tests decay-free animals developed cavities even without direct contact, suggesting possible human transfer and raising prospects for an anti decay vaccine pending further study.
Rotary District 581 Governor George P. Cullum Sr. of Dallas will visit the Whitewright Rotary Club, meeting at 5:30 Thursday with officers and chairmen, then speak at noon Friday at the weekly gathering. Cullum, a Dallas County native in waterworks construction, serves as a bank director and holds multiple civic roles including president of the Texas Society for Crippled Children and chairs at SMU and the Dallas County Industrial Home.
LeRoy Moody Anderson Sr. of Denison, a retired newspaper publisher and minister, died Friday night at the Union Printers Home in Colorado Springs. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Denison with burial in Fairview Cemetery. He founded the Denison Press in 1925 and led it until retirement last February, while continuing ministry on weekends. His sons LeRoy Jr. and Carey took over the paper.
Radiation from the Soviet Union's enormous blast was reported to fall on the USSR with U S likely to receive most of the fallout as “hot rain” next spring. Dr. Lester Machta said initial radiation could reach North America by Thursday or Friday with health officials noting levels may not reach danger thresholds but could peak. Public Health Service expands radiation sampling stations in Alaska from three to six, with 51 other stations nationwide to monitor fallout.
A mountain of onyx valued at three million dollars is reported at Meramec Caverns in Stanton Missouri. The discovery centers onyx deposits within the cavern complex and draws attention from local authorities and gem enthusiasts.

He admitted being late after getting lost near the Katy tracks but apologized to about 100 listeners.
Sherman District Office manager Gus Jones says social security programs are available to civic clubs farm groups women's clubs schools employee groups labor unions and more. Services include speakers films and literature with requests directed to 300 East Houston Sherman Texas.
Bonham's oldest industry the Bonham Cotton Mills will close on or around February 1 1962. Manager Harry McDowell says about 250 people will be affected and many families have worked at the mill. The plant has not been sold and closure followed efforts to keep it operating.
Weather Bureau Dallas advises motorists on when to check antifreeze. The earliest recorded freeze in Dallas history was October 27, with typical first freezes around November 22 and as late as December 27.
Dallas report says House Speaker Sam Rayburn, ill with cancer, is being fed through a stomach tube. He will undergo daily X ray irradiation therapy for an upper abdominal tumor lasting a few minutes for an undetermined period.
Mrs Leta McElligott longtime Bells postmaster announced retirement at end of October. An examination will determine her successor as postmaster in Bells.
Enthusiastic crowds from last week's parade carried into Friday's 28 24 win for the Whitewright Tigers over the Van Alstyne Panthers. A 3 00 pm parade downtown Friday invites public participation and car decorating from 1 00 pm. Friday night Whitewright hosts Pilot Point in Dad's Night with fathers wearing players numbers. Pigskin Club plans a 7 30 pm meeting at the Firemen's Hall with movie highlights of Southwest Conference games.
Purchasers urged to beware salt water damaged autos from Hurricane Carla. H C Pittman of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association says unscrupulous promoters sell totaled Gulf area cars after cleaning them up, risking rapid corrosion and quick deterioration. Buy only from reputable, local dealers to avoid losses.
The Post Office Department proposes rate increases of 6 percent on parcel post packages and 13.8 percent on mail or order catalogs. The increases require Interstate Commerce Commission approval and may not take effect for six months or more. Day, denied a general postal rate advance by Congress, is raising charges on some services without additional approval to trim the department's deficit, including boosts to money order charges international mail rates and special delivery fees.
Austin State Comptroller Rob ert S. Calvert reminded sellers they must file quarterly sales tax reports. Tax due Oct. 31 with forms from the comptroller's office. Records must be kept for three years. retailers may retain 1 percent of tax collected for collection expenses.
