Nuclear Heart Hopes For New Artificial Heart
Scientific and medical teams at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston plan nuclear powered artificial heart research. A radioactive capsule would power a tiny steam engine to drive a blood pump. Animal implantation is planned later this year. If successful, a cantaloupe sized unit weighing about five pounds could fit in the rib cage and last up to 10 years as a total heart replacement, removing the need for frequent power source changes.
