Whitewright History Praises Prosperous Texan Town
In October 1894 the Grayson College Journal extols Whitewright as a thriving business center with a 2000 population and a cotton trade of about 15,000 bales last year. It notes rich black waxy soil, high wheat yields, and a well-to-do farming community. Prominent residents and a $650,000 taxable value mark the town as substantial and well governed. The piece adds the town’s name derives from railroad official William Whitewright and that the line once ended there before extending to Dallas.
