The Whitewright gins had 1691 bales ginned by Wednesday night, 279 more than the previous season at the same date. Five hundred sixty two bales were ginned this week with 638 last week as weather and picker effort affect the harvest.
Whitewright residents announce a fundraiser to establish a perpetual endowment for Oak Hill Cemetery. Initial $20,000 gifts from Wm Fleming and Kay Kimbell of Fort Worth spur efforts, with out of town donors active while local response lags. A donor list by lot owner will be published and organizers aim to finish the drive soon to eliminate annual collections.
County agents in Texas announce the Office of Defense Transportation rule requiring a Certificate of War Necessity for farm trucks and other vehicles. Effective Nov 15, certificates limit mileage or enforce minimum loads, with gasoline tire and parts access tied to the certificate. Enforcement clubs and field officers will handle applications and recordkeeping.
Staff Sgt and Mrs Jack E Wallace have returned to Camp Hulen Texas after visiting relatives. Dossey enlists in Army Air Corps. Young enlists in Air Force while employed at Bells bank. Funeral services for Thomas H. Sears were held at his Whitewright home with Rev. Joe Everhart and Rev. W J Epting officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. Sears, born August 14 1864, left a large family and extensive Texas business ties. He was a longtime church member and civic leader.
Funeral services were held for Cecy Lee Carr at the First Presbyterian Church in Whitewright with Rev. Joe Everheart and others officiating. Interment followed at City Cemetery. Survives include two daughters, two sons, two sisters, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Carr died at Wilson N Jones Hospital in Sherman after illness. She was born May 30, 1865, in Dyersburg Tennessee and lived in Texas since age ten.
The Office of Defense Transportation sets a 35 mph speed limit enforceable by up to 10 000 fine and five years in prison, to be implemented by states for all vehicles except common carriers. Gasoline rationing from the Office of Price Administration carries up to 100 000 fine and one year imprisonment, or both, with harsher penalties for false statements. dairy products in Texas numbered 228 factories in 1939 producing goods worth over 27 million dollars.
Mrs W M Samples died at her home in Pampa on Thursday Sept 24 following an operation. Born May 16 1876 in Point Pleasant Tennessee she lived in Ely Whitewright before moving to Pampa two years ago. Survived by husband W M Samples five sons three daughters twenty three grandchildren six great grandchildren and many friends. Funeral services and burial in Pampa with Baptist Church affiliation noted.
The Senate voted 82 to 0 to empower President Roosevelt to stabilize prices, wages, and salaries, after a compromise on farm price issues. The measure, similar House legislation, directs a general stabilization order by November 1 based on September 15 levels, with later actions possible. An unrelated note recalls a Capitol sub-basement tomb intended for George and Martha Washington.
Charles E. Andrews dies at 4 30 p m Tuesday in Denison after a morning illness. Funeral services are set for 3 p m Friday at the Church of Christ, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by brother Lucian Andrews of Ogden Utah nephew Jim Henry Andrews of Whitewright and niece Mrs R E Mays of Chicago.
WPA scrap and rubber drive chief A. T. Gribble announces county trucks will fetch scrap in rural Grayson and Cooke Counties after postcard requests to 1309 South Travis Sherman. He offers payment on pickup and will cut items if too large, estimating two million pounds remain.
The First Methodist Church has a modern 45 by 66 foot educational building with six Sunday school rooms an 80 by 45 foot assembly room a modern kitchen and a superintendent’s office. Costs ran to several thousand dollars and a $1500 heating plant has been installed. Further interior work was planned but funding remains uncertain for completion.
The Office of Price Administration orders a sales freeze on rubber boots and rubber work shoes effective at midnight, lasting until October 5 when a certificate rationing program begins. Footwear will be sold only to men on essential war jobs or in public health and safety roles.
The Barbee-Bassett insurance agency celebrates 45 years since its 1897 founding by Tom Barbee. W. J. Barbee and later Tom Barbee with Floyd Bassett led the firm, now run by Tom Barbee and his wife. It still represents Fireman's Fund Phoenix of London and Milwaukee Mechanics and is Whitewright’s oldest agency.
Washington reports Price Administrator Leon Henderson ordered a nationwide freeze on selling used tires and tubes. A future rationing program will govern reuse and recapped tires, with exemptions for transfers and mounted tires among dealers' stock. special permission may be granted for rubber conservation moves.
