Heavy shells needed as production lags demand on front
Undersecretary of War Robert Patterson said General Eisenhower requires far more artillery ammunition than is being produced. He noted western front troops burn through a month’s supply in ten days with no reserves, and cited March figures of 6,000,000 rounds for European needs and 2,000,000 mortar rounds. He warned about 500 tanks and 900 trucks lost monthly in Europe.
