Cotton Twine Urged in Post Office Work
The Post Office Department plans to buy 1.6 million pounds of twine for six months starting July 1. Texas farmers, led by Senator Tom Connally, press to use cotton instead of jute, arguing cotton producers support the postal service with taxes. The Treasury post office bill favors American products, but the department may accept higher costs. Bids show cotton twine more expensive by about 1.61 per 1,000,000 yards, a difference Connally dismisses as insignificant.
