Grayson Farm Bureau calls a county meeting at Grayson State Bank Sherman on Thursday at 8 p m to discuss pending farm legislation. Bill Widemeyer of Waco Texas Farm Bureau will analyze the bills. Charles Skaggs Whitewright president urges members to attend to contribute to agriculture.
In buying large amounts of frozen food place new packages behind older ones to ensure first in, first out. Guard against soft or damaged packages to avoid spoiled inventory.
Whitewright public schools close the term with four end of year programs. Negro elementary graduation at Western Beauty C M E Church Friday night and high school commencement Monday in the gym. Distinctive ceremonies feature processions, invocations, special songs, and diplomas awarded by school officials.
Marion W. Felker, chief chemist at Anderson, Clayton Co. Sherman plant, earned an Award of Merit from the American Oil Chemists Society. The citation notes his lab achieved the highest standing in the society with a 99.44 percent final grade amid a collaborative project on edible fat samples involving 63 laboratories and analysts under Felker’s supervision.
Austin report notes 111 arrested for fishing without the $2.15 license in the last month. The fee applies to ages 17 to 65 for out of county fishing or use of wind or rod devices. Wardens also arrested 27 night hunters with total fines and costs around 5,929 dollars.
The Whitewright Bloomer Girls start their season Sunday May 28 at 3 p.m. against the Dallas Girls Independents at the Little League field. A sizable crowd is hoped for at the opener.

Gov. Price Daniel signed a law to expand Texas old age and blind aid, adding 1.8 million dollars annually. The measure would raise monthly checks, with average increases of about 1.50 dollars for 222,000 recipients and about 2 dollars for 6,500 needy blind. The plan envisions hospital and nursing care funding via insurance or direct payments, subject to federal approval, potentially starting next fall.
Retus Scott 81 died today in a Bonham hospital. Funeral services 2:30 p m Friday at Barnheart Funeral Chapel Sherman conducted by Rev C J Graves. Burial Pilot Grove Cemetery. Survived by four brothers George E Scott Willie Scott R I Scott Taylor Scott and sister Mrs Birch Allison plus several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p m Tuesday in McKinney for 82 year old Robert Jackson Vandagriff of Melissa who died Sunday in a local hospital. Burial followed at Melissa Cemetery. He was born October 10 1878 in Tennessee, with four daughters two sons a sister and a brother among survivors.
John Biggerstaff reports the Whitewright Community United Fund finances as of May 1 1961 showing contributions pledges and receipts totaling 2987 75 with distributions to Boy Scouts Red Cross Camp Fire Girls and local groups including Park and related activities Printing reserve balance and a 33 05 operating deficit. Officers elected for 1961 62 include Kenneth Frisby president Bill Pettit vice president Roy Blanton treasurer Joe Meador secretary. new and holdover directors named.
The Chamber of Commerce presents The Showboat Minstrel at the Linda Theatre in Whitewright on June 29 and 30. Local talent stars under Renee Morgan with proceeds benefiting the Chamber. Admission is 80 cents for adults and 40 cents for children under 12.
The East Grayson County Singing Convention will be held at Beth el church on Sunday afternoon May 28 starting at 2 o clock. Singers from adjoining counties are expected and Vernie Caraway will be in charge. Public is invited.
The Commerce Department reports Americans drink about 400 million cups of coffee daily and 16 pounds per person yearly. Consumption is rising with stable prices expected through 1965. Coffee is served daily in 95 percent of homes, and half of all international coffee is imported.
Member of Parliament Murdo Martin argued that status symbols drive wasteful spending he described as the root of all evil. He warned people buy unnecessary items with money they lack to impress disliked people.
