Hillsboro Texas May 20 County Tax Collector R B Bob Martin died early today from burns while saving his 14 year old son Brooks who perished in the same blaze. The boy's remains were not located until this morning in the burning residence.
The Extension Service urges drying and evaporating fruit and vegetables during the crisis. Cans are scarce and costly. Texas crops can be dried. Family dryers cost 5 to 6 dollars or can be improvised. A bulletin will be ready by June 1.
A&M College issues a special Extension Farm News on war time animal feeding. It offers plain directions for economical, profitable use of feeds for milch cows hogs horses and poultry. Send for War Time Animal Feeding to Clarence Ousley Director of Extension College Station Texas.
A slow rain began Sunday morning and continued into the day, soaking the surface. Another shower Monday morning replenished soil moisture, helping crops that had suffered from dry winds.
One hundred Van Alstyneers, in autos decorated with streamers, toured Van Alstyne last Friday to promote a chautauqua starting May 24. They were welcomed, shown the town’s facilities, including a $50,000 school building and a million-dollar industrial district, and urged a booster trip if Whitewright needs help again.
In Locust, about eighteen miles NW of Denison, 34 year old J H Morehead shot and killed his wife and then fatally wounded himself with an automatic pistol. Christian, a visitor, related that the couple had separated recently but were on speaking terms and attended church together before the tragedy.
The Grayson County Association of Fairs was organized in Sherman with C. N. Marshal as president and J. K. Surratt as secretary. The group includes Red River Valley Fair and district fairs at Van Alstyne Howe Collinsville Whitesboro Pottsboro Sadler Bells and Whitewright to coordinate carnival bids and fair scheduling.
T. H. Lively paid $600 for four Poland China hogs, intending a hog business as a side line. He bought the best hogs available, said to be double prize winners at the State Fair in Dallas, and aims to raise future prize winners. Rising interest in registered hogs is noted as quality drives demand.
Sailors at the United States naval training station Great Lakes may purchase about 1,000,000 dollars in liberty bonds, announced by Captain W. A. Moffett. Each recruit may be urged to buy a 100 dollar bond for a mother or family member, with installments of 2.85 dollars monthly arranged.
