Carlisle Military Academy wraps up its first session at Whitewright after a rough start. Despite hail rain and neglect damaging property, it opened September 23 and quickly gained local support. The Sun urges community backing as plans begin for a second session.
The Agriculture Department proposes a national summer bird census inviting enthusiasts to record birds by species in defined areas. Comparing data with future censuses will show if laws affect bird populations and if insectivorous birds rise or fall. The Galveston nurses home will be named Rebecca Sealy Nurses home replacing an old building, aiding UT Medical Department nursing students.
W H Longley of Company D 28th Infantry Fifth Brigade writes from Vera Cruz Mexico describing landings on the 23rd at 2 30 a m. heavy fighting with about 100 Mexican dead on Calle Real and estimates of 500 killed in three days. He notes trenches at La Jehara water works 90 to 100 degrees heat and hopes for Mexico City action.
The McKinney Courier-Gazette prints a complimentary notice for Judge W J Mathis candidate for the Fifty ninth District Court. It lauds him as a capable lawyer and judge from Grayson County Sherman tied to Judge Garnett scandal. It notes Mathis rose from 25 cents weekly in a printing office to a judgeship and calls him a genial Christian gentleman at age 42.
Mr and Mrs John Marshall from Sherman visited relatives Saturday. Mr Marshall returned home Sunday while Mrs Marshall extended her stay for several days.
The paper endorses Judge M. H. Garnett as candidate for Fifty-ninth District Judge, subject to the July primary. It notes his long tenure since January 1914, high trial record in McKinney and Sherman, few appeals, and no reversals, with praise for his legal ability, efficiency, and integrity.
A Baptist church program will be held Sunday evening May 24 at 7 15 led by Robert Jones with prayer by Harry Brown. Sarah Lee Holland will read scripture I Chronicles 26 1 28 and II Chronicles 27 with Fred Moore Truett, Miss Adah aper and Miss Olive Neff present leading thoughts on serving in the union. Elvy Hampton speaks on motive and purpose while talks by Lewis Summers Ray Looney Albert Truett Houston Stedham discuss developing life in the union. Song closes the program.
Sher man minister Rev J W Holsapple preached Sunday morning and afternoon at Central Christian church. Regular services are announced for next Sunday inviting all to attend.
