Final 1956 Cotton Crop Report Is Up
The Agriculture Department reports the 1956 cotton crop at 13.31 million bales, down from 14.72 million in 1955 and above the 1945-54 average. Value reached about $2.11 billion with 31.7 cents per pound, while harvested area fell to 15.62 million acres and yield averaged 409 pounds per harvested acre. Acreage was the smallest since 1879. cottonseed production was about 5.42 million tons.
