Whitewright H D Club to Sponsor Summer Festival
The Whitewright Home Demonstration Club met May 8 at Mrs. Ralph Wallace’s home with president Mrs. R A Vestal. They voted to fund one Grayson County 4 H girl’s district encampment and planned a two day Summer Festival in the High School gym in June with baby shows Tom Thumb wedding amateur night cake auctions and more. Miss Zelma Moore advised spraying shrubs infested with bagworms using arsenate or lead and mulching to conserve moisture. Gifts were given during a recreation period to Mrs. O W White and refreshments served for 21 members and three visitors. Next meeting May 22 with Mrs Gordon Mullinix.

Sugar Stamp Day Advances National Validity Date
Washington reports a Department of Agriculture order moving the next sugar stamp validity from July 1 to June 1 to help can fruits before spoilage. Rep. W. R. Poage of Waco says the move, intended to aid early-ripening areas, will apply nationwide and may shift later coupon dates as well.

Whitewright 4-H winners claim Sears pig contest prizes
Nine Grayson County 4-H boys won pigs in the Sears Roebuck Foundation essay contest, with Charles K. Baker announcing winners. Named participants from Van Alstyne, Whitewright, Gunter, Dorchester, and White Rock will keep the pigs as a club project for a year and then show them in Sherman next spring. The eight gift pigs may compete districtwide in Dallas, with the prize boar and future litters to support the Sears program. The essays centered on the Advantages of the Cow Hen Hog Plan.

Senate approves driver responsibility bill in Texas
The Senate passed a measure requiring drivers in accidents with damage over 50 dollars or involving injury or death to report the incident and prove financial responsibility within sixty days. Applicants may post cash or bond or show casualty insurance covering the required amount, or lose licenses. The bill passed 17 to 8 and goes to the House.

CPSC Moves District Office to Whitewright
The Community Public Service Company will relocate its district office from Farmersville to Whitewright on June 1. Five staffers including M. W. Denison anglers reported five more tagged fish in the Lake Texoma Fish Rodeo bringing the total to seven in 12 days of the event. Fish No. 1013 was named Kilroy and carries prizes that could total $876.44 in cash and awards. The club plans monthly tagged fish with added prizes. General Eisenhower ordered the immediate transfer of all volunteer soldiers from desk jobs into the infantry due to a worldwide shortage of trained infantrymen. Whitewright Independent School District trustees elected the 1947 48 high school staff with Homer Gentry as principal and Lillian Neathery, Kathryne Roddy, S T Montgomery Jr, Percy Darwin and Sarah Kilgree among the teachers. Grammer School named Herman Bedford principal, replacing Lucyle Sanders who remains on staff. Negro school teachers James Huckaby and Florine Whitfield reelected. Homes in Deport Sprayed With DDT For Second Year
Deport Times reports spraying of Deport homes and outbuildings with DDT begun Friday after Mayor P. W. Wood granted permission. Robert Westbrook leads the effort with Herbert Henry assisting, using last year’s method with a new $1.50 charge for homes up to four rooms and 25 cents per extra room, plus extra fees for spraying outbuildings. Spraying started in Southwest Deport and will cover the town, following a proven reduction in pests last year. Westbrook recently treated Cunningham, with 85 residences already serviced.

White Leghorns Pay Off For Ben Bailey
Ben F Bailey aged 73 of route one Whitewright runs a poultry business with 140 White Leghorns and 200 sexed chicks. He projects about 1000 in income this year from receipts of 300 in four months, with a 200 profit and 100 expenses. He and Mrs Bailey have raised chickens 50 years and plan a 20 by 40 foot house for 200 more birds. He lives five miles south of Whitewright on the concrete highway. The farm is well improved in the area.

Senate votes labor curbs in narrow party split
In Washington the Senate passed a new national labor policy 68 to 24, hailed by Sen. Taft as equalizing rights for management and labor. The House had approved a stricter union bill 308 to 107. Conference talks will shape a final bill before both chambers vote again. Texas senators backed Taft, with 21 Southern Democrats and few Republicans supporting the labor side. A labor-supported substitute was rejected 73 to 19 before the final tally.

Crop Insurance Measure Reported by House Committee
Washington report states experiments in crop insurance began in 1948 on seven major crops including cotton with up to fifty counties to be insured for wheat, corn and cotton and up to twenty five counties for flax and tobacco.
