Downtown parade opens three day IRA championship rodeo tonight at 6 pm with Diane Wortham Anita Turner and Debbie Duncan representing Whitewright Riding Club for the parade and rodeo events Cowgirls will ride under banners along Wand Street as Texas Westernaires from Fort Worth drill at the event Club concession stands will open nightly at 6 pm and the rodeo is billed as one of the biggest yet with riders from across the area competing for prize money

Election Changes State And County Officials In Grayson County
In the elections held last Saturday incumbents faltered in primaries. Governor Dolph Briscoe won a run off over Preston Smith and Sissy Farenthold with Whitewright supporting Briscoe. Ruth Wiley unseated George Schumacher for county tax assessor collector by 2641 votes after 18 years as chief deputy. District Judge David Brown lost in Grayson but won re election in Collin. Whitewright backed Briscoe and backed Ralph Hall for lieutenant governor. Ben Munson won state representative district 22 with 215 votes to Slagle 90. Wiley won county tax office outright. Voters favored Judge Brown in district 22 by 216 of 305 votes. Grayson turnout exceeded 16,000 ballots in Democratic primary. Whitewright backed anti busing 229 to 49. About 600 registered, 311 voted.

Whitewright residents seek assistance for Bennie and Mrs Parrent whose Pilot Grove mobile home burned May 2 from faulty wiring. Town and Country Club collects kitchen items, towels, linens, quilts and clothing sizes for adults and children, with pickup by club members or drop off at Sherman fire station 1417 US 75 FM road near Johnson and Johnson. No injuries were reported.

A record crowd filled the school gym Friday for the 19th annual Western Week Variety Show. Darrell Dyer and Brenda Bing hosted as Jane Biggerstaff announced parade winners and drawings awarded many names. Awards honored best dressed in Western Wear across elementary to senior high, with student divisions recognizing outstanding outfits and winners of the queen race. The show, themed Ponder-Over Ranch, featured jokes, songs, and dances culminating in a modern finale.
