Scholastic enrollment tops county in Sherman area report
County Superintendent J A Giles reports a countywide scholastic enrollment of 19 653 for the year, up 70 from last year. Denison leads the twelve districts with 8 312 whites and 1 120 negroes, followed by Sherman and Whitesboro with smaller white and minority counts. A bankruptcy petition was filed in Sherman US district court by T L McDonald a Luella grocer, liabilities 2 521 56 assets 7 827 65 and exempted property 5 008.

The American oil tanker Vacuum was sunk by a German submarine on Saturday while en route to the United States. The captain, part of the crew, a naval lieutenant, and nine American gunners are missing. The chief mate and seventeen men, including three naval gunners, were landed.
