Rainfall in Whitewright measured 1.4 inches Tuesday night and Wednesday, bringing March total to 3.6 inches. Public Health Service reports a sharp rise in deaths from influenza and pneumonia this winter, mainly among those over 65. Weekly tolls in 108 cities average over 700, with a March 1 total of 847 and outbreaks linked to the Asian flu epidemic.
In Canelly Italy Giuseppe Gallo aged 96 told new husbands never listen to their wives claiming it led him and his 92-year-old wife Giuseppina to reach 72 years of marriage. The report notes he is an old hand at matrimony and tends the home bound by years.
Funeral services were held for Joe Stephens 82 at Earnheart Funeral Chapel with Rev. Waldrop and Rev. Scarborough officiating. Interment was at Wittitoe Cemetery. Stephens a Ken tucky town native and longtime Tom Bean Baptist deacon is survived by his wife seven sons four daughters and 18 grandchildren.
The Whitewright Volunteer Fire Department extends fire telephone alerts to three more members, bringing four extensions in service. Fire Chief Walter Bunch notes the line rings at the station to guide crews to the fire location. the line must not be dialed except to report a fire.
R Floyd Williams 70 died Sunday in a McKinney hospital Funeral services were held Tuesday at North Baptist Church McKinney burial in Pecan Grove Cemetery He was born April 28 1887 in Porters east of Whitewright and married Leva McFarland January 20 1909 Survivors include wife son Jack Williams Oklahoma City daughter Carse Parker Mid-West City two brothers F C Williams S B Williams three sisters and eight grandchildren plus one great grandchild
Nine proposed constitutional amendments are listed for the November 4 general election. Top item calls for annual legislative sessions and a $7,500 yearly pay for members, with eight additional measures including retirement for county and precinct officers, filling vacancies by commissioners courts, requirements to resign before seeking other offices, four year term limits for city officers, a pension for Texas Rangers, state advertising funding, welfare medical care payments, and creation of hospital districts in Amarillo Wichita and Jefferson counties.
Mrs Nova O. Little aged 86 died Saturday in Denton after a long life begun December 27, 1871 in Weston. Funeral services were held in Sherman and burial was at West Hill Cemetery. Survived by three daughters, two sons, 18 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
The Fort Worth Star Telegram notes Walker A. Brents of Fort Worth becomes District 10 GOP committee member, succeeding Bayard Friedman. Brents, a former IRS employee and Army lieutenant colonel, previously active in Tarrant GOP affairs since the 1920s and now a real estate agent.
The Army announced a voluntary program giving soldiers who sign for a 12 year hitch four years of college education. Participants can join year by year, while remaining on active duty with GI pay. The government will cover tuition and related costs.

Mayor Ernest J. Lilley of Denison, ex Whitewright businessman, was resting satisfactorily Wednesday at Madonna Hospital after two Tuesday attacks. The second was a very mild stroke with no paralysis. He was reported recovering steadily, with visitors not admitted. The Herald detailed Lilley Linn store collapse and a cafe dizziness episode before admission.
Sullivan County grand jury in Blountville Tenn asks local barbers to refuse ducktail haircuts for teenagers citing ties to juvenile delinquency. Sheriff says most youths arrested recently for burglaries and assaults wore ducktails.
