L. W. Bassett, 87, died suddenly in Sulphur Springs on Tuesday. Funeral services were held there Wednesday afternoon. Survivors include two sons, one of whom is Floyd Bassett of Whitewright, one daughter, and several grandchildren.
The Reader Railroad, the last regular all steam powered line in the U S, has shifted schedules to run passenger service on Saturdays. President T W M Long of Shreveport La says trains run Tuesday Thursday and Saturday from Reader Ark to Waterloo Ark, with a morning Read er departure at 10 30 a m and return by 4 30 p m. The line serves timber and oil areas and added passenger coaches in 1962.
Secretary Orville L. Freeman told the Senate Agriculture Committee that more home cooking by housewives could lower family food costs. He noted a 35 percent rise in food costs over 20 years while farm prices fell, attributing much of the increase to taxes wages promotion and packaging in prepared foods like TV dinners.

James Birt Phillips sustained a head gash with several stitches after a fall into a rock pit on Sunday. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Will Martin on February 28. The Enterprise school house burned down on Thursday morning. R S Morehead died Friday at the home of Mr and Mrs O L Jones. John R Burk died Sunday in a Sherman hospital.
The Parent-Teacher Association held its monthly meeting Tuesday in the Elementary School library to observe Texas Public School Week. Mrs. David Johnson's third grade won the room count. Sam P. Hooper and Clint Hennig spoke. Parents toured Science Fair work. refreshments were served. next meeting is April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elementary School gym with the program Sing a Song of Sixpence.

The inaugural Chamber banquet is set for April 14 at 7:00 pm in the High School gym, featuring Dr. Earl Williams of Dallas as speaker and tickets at 1.75 dollars.
Miss Barbara Ann Shepherd and Robert W. Layman were married Saturday at First Baptist Church in a 5 p.m. ceremony conducted by Rev. C. L. Cole of Como. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Shepherd, and groom, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Layman, plan to reside in Sherman after a brief honeymoon.
Beaverton Oregon three pharmacists market their own brand of cigarettes with the word cancer on a black and white package. Howard Steinbach says the cigarette is meant to slow those who cannot quit and that cancer cigarettes cost 50 cents a pack. They plan an advertising program to build a national market, arguing cancer is not cheap and each pack prompts self reflection.
