Living Costs Up A Third Since 39
The Department of Labor reported that the cost of living for Americans is a third higher than at the start of World War II in 1939 and continues to rise. In the month ending May 15 the price of essentials for moderate income urban families rose 0.5 percent, pushing the consumer price index to 131.5 percent of the 1935-39 average. Congress Extends Draft and Raises Pay in 1946 Plan
Congress extended the draft law and approved pay boosts for servicemen after Army noted no July or August inductions. The package, sent to President Truman for signature, runs the act to March 31, 1947, bans 18 year olds from induction but requires their registration, allows inductions of nonfathers 19 through 44, and lets draftees leave after 18 months.
