Sherman report states a $7 648 state payment was sent to county school superintendent George W Acton for rural schools. The sum completes the final 1 payment of 15 per pupil for 1927 28 bringing total disbursed to 114 720 for the year. Schools will use the money for salaries and operating costs though several districts face deficits requiring September receipts to cover obligations.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary McGaughey wife of the late J. C. McGaughey were held at the Davidson home Friday at 10 a.m. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery. She died at her daughter’s home near Quanah. Survivors include two children H. P. McGaughey and Mrs. H. M. Hill, four grandchildren, and one sister Mrs. J. E. Ellis.

First Bale of Cotton Sells for 1175 in Houston
The first bale of the 1928 Texas cotton crop from Edinburg sold at auction in Houston for 1175 to R M Gordon, a Houston cotton factor. The 415 pound bale was graded strict middling 11 16 staple and ginned by Farmers Gin Co of Edinburg. A second first bale from Mission reached Houston shortly after and was sent to Galveston for sale.

Farm Home Destroyed By Fire In Desert Community
A tenant house on Mrs. Willie Fletcher’s Desert farm south of town burned Wednesday at 11. It was insured for 500 dollars with W. J. Barbee agency. Contents were a total loss. A young couple occupying the house were in a nearby field and could not save their belongings.

Prowlers Steal Gasoline Paint Tires From Homes
