Wage Slash Hits All Railroad Workers Nationwide
Chicago May 31 The United States Railroad Labor Board ordered a 12 percent cut in wages for nearly two million railroad workers across eighty six railroads effective July 1 The move reduces annual payrolls by about 400 million dollars and covers all classes from engineers to laborers The decision limits its reach to carriers filing wage reduction petitions by April 18 but allows further inclusion by addenda and specific classes per carrier Union leaders and railroad executives reacted with disappointment saying the measure falls short of reversing last year’s 20 percent wage increase and still leaves workers better off by about 200 million dollars compared with July 1 1920 levels
