A grammar lesson ends with a bathroom joke as a teacher writes to a mother about her bright yet mischievous son. The mother replies she has her own troubles with the father. A man boasts of being self made until a quiet voice counters him.
A teacher played the Star Spangled Banner and asked the class to identify it. A pupil exclaimed that it is easy, saying it’s what they show every Friday on TV just before the fights.
A business man rings a friend. a poised child asks how to spell Brown and how to make a B, prompting a pause. In another scene a three year old is licked by a large dog and exclaims with wonder that the dog tasted him, not bit.
Washington Dieters may space meals any way without changing weight according to Agriculture Department experiments with 15 college female volunteers. Groups fed identical calories in six small meals or large dinners showed similar use of protein fat minerals and vitamins. The report notes those with large dinners may be better nourished at night.
Stalin's daughter Svetlana Alliluyeva is denounced by her son Josef Alliluyev a 22 year old medical student in Moscow. He says the defection to the United States stems from instability of character and notes no contact with his mother except a brief Swiss telephone call. He and his sister Ekaterina 17 wrote to Svetlana last spring condemning her actions.

Washington reports the federal budget deficit for the last 12 months at 9.9 billion dollars the largest in eight years and second largest in peacetime. Officials cite increased Vietnam costs and project the current year's deficit between 13.6 and over 20 billion. Treasury Secretary Fowler and Budget Director Schultze present the figures noting 1967 receipts at 115.8 billion and spending at 125.7 billion.
Dr. James P. Lodge of the National Center for Atmospheric Research warned in Cleveland that high pollution could trigger a cooler climate or even an ice age. He predicted many years without a summer in northern cities and noted Pacific Northwest glaciers have halted shrinking for several years.
Washington Census Bureau reports the population as of June 1 at 198,938,000 including servicemen overseas. The figure is 2,209,000 above last year’s estimate and well above the 180 million counted in 1960, with officials predicting 200 million by year’s end or early next year.
American manufacturers plan to use enough rubber in 1967 to fill a train from Chicago to Pittsburgh. A leading synthetic rubber producer expects domestic consumption to exceed 5 billion pounds, with over 75 percent synthetic. The total equals about 26 pounds per person in the United States, far above the rest of the Free World.
The chemical industry in South Africa reports an annual turnover of 490 million dollars, making it the fourth largest industrial group in the country.

Washington reports that about 9,000 large-screen color TV owners with GE consoles and table models bought between Sept 1, 1966 and May 31, 1967 are urged to disconnect immediately while officials check for possibly harmful X rays from certain tubes. Small-screen and black and white sets are excluded. Surgeon General William H. Stewart announced the warning following GE’s nationwide search that failed to locate roughly one tenth of the suspected sets.

A son was born to Mr and Mrs Will Scoggins of Pilot Grove on July 14.
In an automobile crash Tuesday night Ellis Doc Alexander and George Buck Hopper died from fatal injuries. Driver John C. Hefner was injured. Also noted is a birth on July 19 to Mr. and Mrs. T A Gray. Four Oscar Bowen family members suffer typhoid fever. A mare owned by John Hill was killed when struck by Elmer Brown’s car west of Trenton on July 21 1937.
The Whitewright Public Library reports 217 membership cards and about 900 books checked out, with 1500 hours of volunteer work by Friday Literary Club members and locals. The library holds 1800 books including 200 on loan from Denison Public Library and 200 from Texas State Library.
The Treasury Department ends its policy of selling silver to domestic industry at $1.29 an ounce, effectively removing a subsidy. Silver will be available, but at market prices, currently above $1.80 an ounce, with expectations of around $1.50 as the initial impact fades. Producers of film and silverware plan price increases due to higher silver costs.

The Woman's Missionary Society of the Baptist Church met Monday for a Royal Service program led by Mrs Henry McFatridge. Mrs A R McMurry read scripture and Mrs J C Gillespie led prayer. Participants included Mrs B W Newman Mrs Gillespie Mrs W H Stedham Mrs Mary Lou Ayres Mrs Gosnell and Mrs McFatridge. After the program a business session was held with twelve members present.
